Long time researcher (and history teacher) - interested in 177 Squadron RAF (great uncle) and 41 Air School (grandfather). Also researching the war records of the pupils at the school I work at.

    Many thanks Ross.
My great uncle was William Unitt Humphreys (in the records he is mistakenly recorded as "Humphries"). He and his pilot, G. Bloom (of North Walsham, Norfolk) were shot down in their Beaufighter on 24/2/1944 over the coast of Burma. I have his memoirs which I am currently typing up on to a blog.
My grandfather, Charles Woodward Gleave was at 41 Air School in Collondale, East London, SAF. I know he was doing navigation training and have his exercise book which I plan to scan and upload soon. He survived the war. I'm interested in finding out about life at the air school.

    Hello,

Great stuff - two lesser covered areas of the Air War.

We are lucky that the SAAF supplied copies of all their ORBs to the TNA in Air54 series - they are a bit fragmented in the archive but these two pages I prepared will guide through where to find the specific time frame for the Air School and in the general narratives the direction the SAAF was headed.

    Guide to AIR 54 series covering SAAF 1939 – 1945 – RAFCommands 2.0

and more specific on Air School

SAAF Training Organisation – RAFCommands 2.0

Great stuff Ross, many thanks. The work in progress of my great-uncle's memoirs can be found here: A Llanbedrog Man at War. Currently at Mauripur en route to Burma.
