Hello everyone, thank you for allowing me to join the forum. I have a keen interest in WW2, my Uncle Tommy was in the REME in Egypt and Italy during the war and I have a few photos etc. from his time there. By coincidence my wife's Grandfather was also in the REME but in India. My main interest was peaked when I started going to France in 1998 for the Le Mans 24hr motor race and on the way back through Normandy we used to stop off at the museums and battlements along the coast, since then I have read a lot of books on the war and been back to France over 20 times including the last 4 D Day commemorations (2014, 2015, 2016 & 2017) mainly staying in Arromanches. I have a broad interest in all of the armed services during the war plus the home front, it must have been an exciting and frightening time to be alive. Having spoken to many veterans over the years it was clearly a period that nobody who lived through it will ever forget, both for good and bad reasons. My friends father is a D Day veteran of RM48 Commando, landing on Juno beach on the morning of 6th June. He is still alive and well at the age of 92 and early last year received his Legion d'Honneur. I also have two neighbours who are both ex-RAF and both served during the war years. I am sure that the forum will be of great interest in expanding my knowledge, there are clearly a lot of very knowledgeable people on here and I look forward to being a small part of it. Thanks again, Jonathan
Hi Jonathan and welcome. You have probably already picked it up from this site, but the first place to start is to get hold of service records: Get a copy of military service records - GOV.UK Veterans can get these at no cost. If you publish names and everything you currently know, I suggest a separate post per individual in the appropriate forum, you may well get some information. Best of luck
Dont forget to start a thread if you require any further info Once you start it never stops Good luck Regards Clive
Thank you for the warm welcome everyone, much appreciated. I've got some bits and pieces to post once I figure out the right forum section they go in!
