Knowing that I'm interested in military history a friend of mine asked me to try and identify medals that had been awarded to a member of his family. I haven't a clue where to start, can anyone help from the photograph I've been given? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    From left to right:
    BEM
    1939-45 Star
    Atlantic Star
    Africa Star
    Italian Star
    39-45 War Medal

If I am wrong, someone will certainly correct the information.

The large boxed medal and the miniature on the left are I believe the BEM (civil award)

Nice to see the Northumberland Union of Mineworkers (50th anniversary) 1893 - 1943 lapel badge too.

    Kind regards, always,

    Jim.

    Harry (new member),

Do you have permission to post up the name of the British Empire Medal recipient, please, if possible? (Name should be engraved on rim).

Did they (perhaps) work at Dudley Pit just to the North of Newcastle?

Apologies if my questions are too personal, and will absolutely understand if you don't wish to post their name.

    Good luck with your research.

    Kind regards, always,

    Jim.

Thanks chaps, it all fits, my mate comes from a long line of Geordie Coal Miners!
Jim, I'll find out the name on the BEM today and let you know.

My partner's father served in the 8th Army during WW2, at today's Remembrance Parade she found out she could wear his medals. They should be worn on the right side of the chest, but we're not sure of the correct order. She has the round 1939/45 War Medal and two stars, 1939/45 and the Africa Star...
anyone know how (left to right) they should be worn please?

Just in case her father was perhaps entitled to more medals, might be worth giving the Medal Office a shout. It doesn’t cost anything and in my experience they have been super efficient lately.

Does the Africa Star have an 8th Army clasp on the ribbon? If not, and it turns out her father earned that, then the Medal Office should also let you know that too.

Thanks for that Wobbler, 8th Army clasp is indeed on the Africa Star Medal. I'm getting a three medal mounting pin and will tickle 'em up for Herself for next year. I'm not sure whether to polish the medals up or leave the 70 year old patina on 'em!?
