Hi I am looking at a pair of WW2 medals and they do not have any info besides the box of issue and on the front it says Mr JE Lindsay180 Endike Road, Hull On the rear is If undelivered please return to Director of Navy Accounts, branch 3B, D Block, Foxhill Hutments, Bath. I can see he was born in 1918 and died Hull in 1993, he married in 1943 to a Sylvia Yorke but that’s all. can anybody assist with what/ where/ when he served in the Navy, Merchant Marine etc and any rank and service number thanks in anticipation gunner
A possible, but no naval connection as yet England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1916-2007 Name: John Edward Lindsay Death Age: 74 Birth Date: 15 Oct 1918 Registration Date: Jul 1993 Registration District: Hull Inferred County: Humberside Register Number: A43A District and Subdistrict: 5502A Entry Number: 268 TD UK, Naval Medal and Award Rolls, 1793-1972 Name: John Lindsay Medal or Award: RN Long Service and Good conduct Medal Service Year: 1935-1940 Ship Name: Royal Sovereign
The first thing is to find out if he was Royal Navy or Merchant Navy - its not definitive but WWII Royal Navy group of six medals to John Edward Boden in box of issue. • £160.55 This is a Royal Navy group, identified as such not just because of the likely combination of campaign star, but the rear of the box, though damaged, does include the correctly placed letter to indicate the return address: Director of Navy Accounts, BRANCH 3B “D” BLOCK, Foxhill Hutments, BATH, Somerset. I am hoping that some of our naval experts will help out here - might be worth an edit to the thread title to add in Probably Naval Medals or something like that to attract the Naval side TD

TD again thank you It is appreciated giving your time, I’m not great with WW2 1) Where will I find the Medal Awards Rolls please? 2) what was he Gazetted for do you know? Gunner
I have tried to find him on Ancestry but cant - medal rolls, hmm - your best bet is to apply for his service records if you believe that this is the right man as they will tell you what medals he was awarded, along with the other pertinent details - it may include if it is the same man who received the MID as the London Gazette records TD
Medals to Merchant Seamen were issued by the Registrar General of Shipping & Seamen in Cardiff, so I would hazard a guess if they were MN issue the return address would be Cardiff.
In the edge of the box should be his naval number the records still held by mod and will cost £30 to get released you can write to mod medal office and they will confirm his medals
1939 Register - is this him, 12 Wilberforce Street, Wallsend? Birth is same day and month as #3 by Tricky, but year 1919, interesting. John Edward Lindsay's probate record in 1993 has same address as medal box.
The 1939 Register is slightly short in his service number as well as incorrect on his year of birth England & Wales, Civil Registration Marriage Index, 1916-2005 Name: John E Lindsay Registration Date: Jan 1943 [Feb 1943] [Mar 1943] Registration Quarter: Jan-Feb-Mar Registration District: Hull Inferred County: Yorkshire East Riding Spouse: Sylvia M Yorke Volume Number: 9d Page Number: 352 The daughter mentioned in the paper Name: Vivienne I Lindsay Registration Date: Apr 1947 [May 1947] [Jun 1947] Registration Quarter: Apr-May-Jun Registration District: Hull Inferred County: Yorkshire East Riding Mother's Maiden Name: Yorke Volume Number: 2a Page Number: 502 The son born later Name: David J Lindsay Registration Date: Oct 1948 [Nov 1948] [Dec 1948] Registration Quarter: Oct-Nov-Dec Registration District: Hull Inferred County: East Riding of Yorkshire Mother's Maiden Name: Yorke Volume Number: 2a Page Number: 324 TD
I think he is missing some medals He was serving 1939 and was mid in 1942 so if home service only missing a defence medal but suspect he is missing campaign stars send a copy of his death certificate to the medal office and they will tell you what was issued and when this service is free his service records will cost £30 and you will get his records and medal card

Missing an Africa star at least how thick is the box as that would indicate how many medals were originally in it
James will let you know when I receive it as it’s in Royal Mails hands. Can anybody see pages 4881 or 4880 of the London Gazette for that day (above) please to show what he received (MID) Mr Jinks did he gain his MID on this ship with the other gents? thank you everyone
Yes,The link to the website lists them by their ship. The London Gazette gives a listing no details of the action. Hi the above does look like the same chap and defo from a hull as it states on the front of Medal box. Only thing is it says on the side in very faint writing MX8039 and think the last two numbers are 22 but could be 02. MX 803922. ? MX 803902 ?
