Depending on where you live you can obtain a copy of the death certificate online from your records office. Links here.

A photocopy of the certificate is acceptable.

I git round the fees by applying on behalf of my mum and gran as they were higher up the next of kin ladder than me!

Hi all doing research into my mothers father, and I have his service number 5989835, but I think this is when he was with REME, but I want to learn more about his earlier career, especially as he was at Dunkirk. Do service numbers change? If I apply for his military records will it show his full military history?

    Thanks in advance

Beds & Herts regiment numbers were 5942001 to 5998000. He would retain his number unless he was promoted to Officer.

Haha Owen on his starting blocks again.

Oh fantastic, that's a great start for me to look more into it. What I know so far is.....

He was attached to Irish guards at one time discharged 1946/47 then joined territorial army in 1947. And that he was shot in the arm and leg at Dunkirk and stretchered off.
And that he didn't take part in D-Day as he was stationed either in Egypt or the Middle East

I am yes, as some of my family managed to find out his service number. I know between now and 2018 I could have got his service records etc, but life gets in the way and not managed to do much till now when I have some downtime to research more

Ok. I'll merge threads to keep it all in one place.

If he was REME his papers may be in the first tranche of files recently transferred from MOD to U.K. National Archives.

You need to go on the National Archives site and use their Discovery search engine to see if his papers are there.

If not you’ve likely got a long wait ahead of you if you decide to apply to MOD for his papers. If you had applied as advised in 2018 you would’ve had his papers in a handful of weeks but now post covid it’s taking over a year to get files from MOD.
