Whilst patrolling in the Fastnet area on 15th November 1942, the narrative of a 304 Squadron Coastal Command ORB includes "Sighted Force LQ" Can anyone please tell me what exactly was Force LQ?

    Hi Neville,

Perchance was No. 405 Sqn involved in this operation?

If so, their squadron code was LQ. I see No. 405 Sqn was loaned to Coastal Command in "late October 1942"

    Regards,

That makes as much sense as anything! There was no further embellishment to give anyone a clue as to what it meant but there is no mention of any other Squadron in this entry. I know the ORB was typed up by an English clerk who was pretty patient (his name was John Comper) and I think that the Polish airman who gave him the report may have been a little limited in his English vocabulary. I also know that 304 Squadron frequently mentioned sighting aircraft from other squadrons. So, if you replace "force" with "squadron" it becomes understandable. Thanks for your contribution.

Just wondering if this could have been a surface force with something to do with back up to Operation Torch, November 42 ? Among the codes i have seen used for groups of vessels on a map covering from the UK to destination, were LX, KX, H, X, P, Q, all prefixed with "Force"... just a thought.

That is certainly a possibility. Fortunately, the answer is not vital to my research but it has certainly aroused my curiosity.
