Hi im hoping that someone may be able to help with any research to a Soldbuch that i have just acquired.
The Soldbuch was a Ersatz (replacement) and belonged to a Heinz Schulz, it was replaced on the 24th of November 1944, Since April 6th 1944 he was a member of 3 battalion / Fallschirmjager regiment 1: Schulz served from 1941.

3 Battalion had seen action with 3,Fallschirm-Jager division at:

1944: Normandy St.L?hambois, Rouen

Sept 1944 they were at Tirlemount (Tienen), Maastricht, Aachen.

November 1944 at Kranenburg, Arnhem

Dec 1944 Battle of the Bulge

1945 Euskirchen Remagen Eifel, Ruhr-Kessel.

I have managed to research some of the Soldbuch ie name age height etc, but wondered if anyone would have any ideas how i could research Heinz Schulz himself (needle in a hay stack i know)
Also would anyone know of any additional information on his unit. (good references net etc)
One other thing are there any sites that anyone can recommend for researching the Luftwaffe Soldbuch?

Many Thanks as always Brad.

Brad,

you better watch the correct spelling in your research - just not to fool search engines:
Soldbuch
Maastricht
Battle of the Bulge
Euskirchen
Ruhr-Kessel

Tienen might also be spelled Thienen, French Tirlemont (lying in Belgium).

Good luck with your research!

All the Soldbuch related websites concentrate on Heer issued variants that deviate from LW ones. But here they are...

Soldbuchweb
Der Erste Zug Pt 1
Der Erste Zug Pt 2
Der Erste Zug Pt 3
Reading A Soldbuch

There is also a soon to be published book that does give details for LW Soldbucher...

B&D Publishing

And there is also A Collector's Guide To World War II German Wehrpasses & Soldbuchs by Emilie Caldwell Stewart and Collecting World War II German Military Pay & Service Books by Nigel Allison (Ulric of England) that provide basics.

As for researching the soldier himself, you could always try the phone directory for the town listed in the Soldbuch to see if he has any surviving relatives (or even if he is still alive.) But considering that his name is very common that could be a big undertaking, not to mention potentially opening a can of worms - what happens if they don't want to be contacted, what if the Soldbuch was looted from him at the wars end and the family want it back etc etc?
German organisations that still hold personnel files don't tend to hand out information to non-next of kin. The Soldbuch potentially holds a fair amount of information when you go from cover to cover and decipher every facet and tie it in to the units he served with so while trying to obtain information on the soldier from outside sources is a needle in a haystack task you can still gather a lot of information with what you have and from books on the units.
