Ughhh. I had hoped no one would ask :D I'm trying to find out - there are a few that I have that also include Iraq. I was sure it was from an iPhone app, but can't find anything yet. Will let you know when I do!

Rosy, don't suppose you have a colour version of that do you? The legend says some locations are marked in red and blue.

No, 'fraid not Mike. Pity because it would be interesting to see which sites were to be developed wouldn't it?

Wills, I have been puzzling over the Luftwaffe recce photo in post #13 and have come to the conclusion that they seem to have misidentified the location. I am pretty sure the location in the photo is in Ismailia on the north shore of Lake Timsah wheras every other source clearly indicates Quassassin as being several miles west of Ismailia. Attached annotated screenshot from Google Earth. Allowing for 70 odd years changes including apparently some land reclaimation around the small island shown on the LW photo it seems to be a match.
    What do you think?

Yes it is an odd affair to say the least! On Google Earth El Kassasin on the i (information) the Qassasin name is used. It would appear that the location West of the lake is favourite and as you say they have made a mess of it which make me wonder if another location has the information recorded from Quassasin proper.

Thats a great map you posted there Wills.

I have been reading some accounts on the internet which mentions Sweet Water Canal, just near Qassasin. This canal seems to have been quite near the camps as men were warned not to swim in there. There was nothing "sweet" about it!
Looking at Google Earth it looks like it runs along the Ismalia/El Zagazik Road and south of Ismalia into the north of Lake Timsah where you marked Mike.

I remember that If one was unlucky enough to fall into the canal a series of nasty inoculations became obligatory !

Africa Target Dossiers/Egypt/Ismailia Artillerie Kaserne 1 (Artillery Barracks)

nur für den dienstgebrauch - Only for Service Use.

Top right of air recce photo's a next, previous and slideshow arrow allowing a scan of all of the photo's on this link.

Africa Target Dossiers/Egypt/Ismailia Artillerie Kaserne 3

hauptotfunkstation at A - Radio Station

Kustenschutz Kaserne: Coast Guard Barracks. at B

The legend has listed - outbuildings, Radio masts, flat areas. accommodation and farm buildings at A and B.

Odd that Fritz got his QuASSasin mixed up with his wherever! 318 Sqn RAF apparently dropped the QU from the name.

Not saying this is it - just an example.

Brilliant links Wills, thanks very much. Interesting many Desert Air Force Landing Grounds are shown and named, this is useful for many other threads.

Mike, I forgot - click on top left Africa Target Dossiers will give:

    Algeria - Egpyt - Libya - Tunisia.

Some of the places my father 'visited' from Heliopolis in April 42 to Castel Benito February 43 (in his 8th year of service) through to the end of the Desert campaign and off to Italy. With 145 Sqn RAF from October 1939 to their disbandment. Occasionally on loan to 145s sister squadron 92 sqn.
