Just found this great site for 1/16th scale parts. The metal road wheels at $30 seem pretty cheap.

    RC Command German Tiger I

Anyone know any other good sites for Tiger parts/upgrades

Smudger, did you make the periscope yourself? Decided I will turn the other Tiger into a late version, especially as I have managed to find reasonably priced, wheels, cupola and hopefully tracks.

Anyone know where to get a better barrel from?

The Gun and turret pieces were provided by a friend who purchased the magazine which had just started up, providing parts each publication to make a 1/16 scale Tiger.

The periscope was assembled from the spruce that came with the turret top, although it would be easy to make yourself, perhaps best in thin brass plate.

Managed to get 2 new metal barrels this week from Ebay. They are the ones that came with issue 1 of the 'Build Your Own Tiger Tank' magazine. There were at least half a dozen listed on there at the time at sold from as little as £2.00 to £5.00. Bargin.

Also there is a guy on there selling brand new Late War Commanders Cupola's with MG42 mounted, made of metal for £16.00 and the engine deck grilles for £9.99. He has an Ebay store and always seems to have plenty of each item.

Next I need to find out how the back of the later war Tigers differed to the earlier model. From pictures it looks as if they did away with the pipe work that is on top of the engine grilles and the 2 boxes on the rear that they run into.

Several units ran without the rear filters which were removed with the pipework, but the metal intake on the rear decking was kept in place.

A good picture of one modelled in the Osprey modelling series called Modelling the Tiger I.

It is a model of Tiger I (Late production) No 322 of s.Pz.Abt. 507, East Prussia, November 1944.

Started work on the second Tiger as this will probably be a project with no certian end date. Started to dissasemble the various parts. Removed the pipe work and filters from the rear deck. Also moved all the bits I could from the rear of the Tiger to be ready to apply the zimmerit. Removed all the wheels as I will eventually add late war metal ones. Also removed the cuppola to make way for the late war version. Still need to turn the pistol port to the correct position as this seems a straight forward job.

Smudger, how the hell did you fit your new barrel? I removed the plastic one and the plate behind it. This then left a plate to fit the new mantlet and barrel to. However the holes don't correspond to the pegs on the back of the new mantlet. I realise I will have to drill new holes but how did you fix yours in place?

I also took the drastic action of disconnecting 3 of the turret wires and cutting the wires for the IR LED in the mantlet. This means I can completely remove the turret from the hull but i will have do try some soldering when it all goes back together:unsure:.

This is probaly a project that will speed up after the festive season when I can justify spending money on all the little extras. I could ask Santa for them but I have my eye on a Heng Long Panther on Ebay;)

Have a look at post No 19.

As you will see I drilled four new holes to accept the metal screw poles on the inside of the turret mantel.
Just position the barrel and mark out the hole centres from the measurements taken from the barrel Mantel screw poles.

Quite simple to produce. Good luck. The gun still operates after I installed it, but obviously will not fire!

Thaks for that Tom. Will have a go tomorrow. If I'd known I would be working on a 1/16 scale Tiger I would have kept an eye open at the newagents when the Tiger build magazine was running. Looks like a lot of the bits would have come in usefull to upgrade the HL Tiger.

The cost would be too great unless you were to pick and choose, which would mean looking at each edition and seeing if it was worth the price to use the pieces.

Bearing in mind there are never many pieces with issue:( and then there is the waiting time.

At the end of the day I just intend to make a respectable model Tiger I, it will not be perfect, but as long as it looks reasonable that will suffice for me.

It would be a case of picking and choosing. I've just bought the edition with the spare track links that go onto the side of the turret. I bought it mainly to see how the fixings to hold the track links fix onto the side of the turret, that way I can hopefully scratch build some on the next project.

There is someone on Ebay at the moment selling the first 11 issues for £40, not sure what you get but it looks like most of the turret.

The work continues on the Tiger. Have removed a couple of the side skirts and added battle damage to some of the others. Have applied zimmerit along the sides of the hull, next will add it to the front. Not looking forward to the back panel due to all the bits on there. Have since found a kit on Ebay that has zimmerit made up sections for a 1/16 Tiger that you simply glue on. It has all the holes cut into it where equipment and the like is stored. Have seen it on someones Tiger and it looked pretty good.

I've also managed to get the extra vents and periscope cover to go on top of the turret but will wait till after christmas to get the new cupola and engine grilles. I also still need the later war road wheels and hopefully metal tracks. I can then use the old plastic tracks to cut up for round the side of the turret and also at the front of the hull.

Will post up pics of work so far.

    DG,

With the rear panel I unscrewed all that can come off after marking the outer edges.

I then applied the zimmerit and reapplied the parts.

I have not had very much free time for modelling but have appled a few thin coats of grey undercoat and the tank is looking ok.

I have just undercaoted the tracks and will spray a rust colour soon, then apply metal paint ( Which can be buffed to a polish ) to the track parts that make contact with the road and polish it up.

Hi Tom. Did you use undercoat from a can? I'm worried about using one that might be too think and loose some of the detail on the Zimmerit.

Finished all the zimmerit on the hull, waiting for the metal escape hatch and pistol port I've ordered for the turret before I apply the zimmerit to it.

Reading up like crazy on painting techniques as its been so long since I was really involved in the model making hobby. Seems to be a lot of emphasis on oil washes, filters and colour modulation!!!!!!! Got a lot of catching up to do.

I'm also getting many crossed wires on paint applications. For more than 13 years I've had the notion that enamles can be applied over acrylics but not the other way round. However reading many of the kit building/painting walkthroughs on other forums people seem to be mixing them freely. This hobby can be very confusing.

What can are you talking about, DG1? I've been using cans all my life (Games Workshop, Andrea, etc.) on much much smaller scales and never had any problems with clogging detail, on 1/16 this shouldn't be a problem.

Just remember that three light coats are way better than one thick one, spray at 8" from the object, and never spray under wet and cold weather - wait for dry days.

I also never had any trouble with enamels over acrylics and vice-versa, it's not confusing at all, just let the paint dry and then cure thoroughly, say preferably overnight.

The can I was talking about was for the undercoat. I wasn't sure if people were using car undercoat from a spray can.

I understood it was for the undercoat :)

Don't use a car spray can, you run the risk of it being too thick, those are meant for something else entirely. Go to a model shop and ask for a matt white (or whatever colour you like best for undercoat) spray can. Revell, Humbrol, Games Workshop, anything of the kind.

I have been away for a few days, but before I left, I managed to get the tracks sprayed rust coloured and I have tested the metal paint that you can polish.

The metal paint was applied to the parts of the track making cotact with the ground and left to dry for a day.

I then just used a paper towel to test the polish technique and was surprised that it worked really well with minimal polishing.

Now I just have both full tracks to apply this technique.
