Not half bad :) And your zimmerit looks smashing!

And this from the most un-PC and viperine tongue in this forum :D

    Miguel,

Many thanks for your kind words.

I have never tried to weather models in the past, my first attempt being to weather the 1/6th Kubelwagen and then only the tyres and windscreen.

I just needed to read the Osprey book on Modelling the Tiger, plus your helpful websites that you kindly provided, in order to rekindle my modelling skills.

The Tiger should look better when painted, but I have not yet decided which colour scheme to go for.

Tom with the late war look your Tiger has I'd go for either the yellow, green, brown look or yellow and green.

If you register on the Military Modelling web site and search the galleries there are some great examples of Tigers. They are a good source of reference as the pics are all in colour and ofetn show them from many angles. The Aromarama modelling site is also a good source for references.

Tracks look great by the way. I'll have to have a try at that myself as the cost of the metal tracks is pretty steep.

    DG,

I was at a show here at The Luftwaffe Museum where an exhibitor was a collector of Heng Long and similar scaled R/C Tanks.

Even with spending lots of money on metal wheels and tracks etc, the end product was not that much better than what you start with.

Ok if you wish to model the late model with tyreless wheels etc.

Having bought two excellent Tiger books this Christmas I well decide shortly which one to model.

    Regards
    Tom

I have been looking at ways to fabricate the spare track hangers for the turret of the Tiger I.

I have tried pieces of brass, plastic and anything that I thought would look good from my odds and sods box.

I looked at some nylon electric cable fastners and an idea came to me that the track link could be held at the top after modifying the snap end of the cable, by cutting it with a kraft knife.

The bottom holder was a hinge type bracket that the track pin hole dropped down on and was held by the pin and the top clamp clipped down over the track cleat end.

When looking from above the bottom holding pin is offset slightly from the top clamp.

I made the bottom pin holder from a small block of plastic and drilled the hole for the pin and set with instant glue.

The track links are just held in place with blutack/Pritt, just to show you how it will look when finished.

Officially there were 5 pieces on the left side and two on the right, but some units places spare track over other places on the turret and hull.

I think that they will look OK when set in position and painted.

    Regards
    Tom

    Miguel,

I hope that you were not expecting fancy machines :D.

All is made by hand tools and a great drill and multi-tool, battery operated and can take small circular saws or cutting discs, plus polishing and burnishing tools.

The slitting disc came in well for producing the vision slits on each side of the turret :)

The work room is a store room for almost anything and L shaped.
I took over the bottom of the L shape and work from a couple of pieces of old kitchen worktops that fit along the back wall with shelves underneath for storage of toolboxes, power tools etc for the house.

A small floodlight provides a good light source from above the units. B)

I have just secured the top clamps in place and drilled a small .75mm hole and pinned to the top of the turret, plus a drop of epoxy resin.

I was looking at the space available in the rear and thought it would be nice to fabricate some cooling fans, two per radiator situated at an angle below the rear decking.

Using some thin brass sheet I scribed 4 20mm diameter circles, divided and scribed to provide 8 segments.

A small hand tinsnip cutter was used to cut out the circled, which I trimmed by filing to final round shape.

I then snipped the segments, which automatically bent slightly when cut, thus forming an almost finished fan.

A small drill and centre boss was inserted and glued in preparation to mounting on a plastic frame as yet not fabricated.

Some pictures to show progress to date.

    Regards
    Tom

Excellent work Tom. The next bits I need to order are the cupola and extra track links for the turret sides. Did you buy yours as an aftermarket product or are they more left overs from the "build your own Tiger" magazine?

The build side of things has slowed down for me but has given me chance to do loads of reading up on painting. Everything seems pretty straight forward and I feel fairly confident about the steps I will have to go through. I do wounder though if painting armour on this slightly larger scale will throw up any problems not encountered on 1/35. I've also built up a nice collection of Tiger colour schemes but will probably end up going for one like Wittmans.

    DG,

The track links are from a broken up Panther, the front looks awful due to using the same floorpan as the Tiger so I used it to plunder spare parts.

The problem that I have is that retaining the air filters on the rear it rules out a lot of
units that I have photographs of.

I will probably go with a Unit that could have had different variations at the same
    time. Artistic licence:)

Tom, you ARE going to do something about those casting disks on the track links, right? :D The fans look great!

DG1, it's not about reading, it's about doing and doing and doing again until you master the techniques, after that it will come naturally. A traditional saying among the modelling community and I'm sure inside many others is "The first ten years are the most frustrating"!

It all boils down to the fact that you have to be your harshest judge, and be able to honestly recognise that your pretty effort may not be so good after all. Accept criticism from those who know - certainly not any Tom, Dick or Harry - accept your less-than-good effort as part of the learning process, and then start again!

    Miguel,

It's amazing just what detail is picked out when you use a macro close up:D.

It calls for a touch of grinding out, good job it is only seven;)

I have just cut out some styrene to represent the fuel tanks and Radiator cooling fan holders.

Will play about with plastic sheeting later and then set them under the rear decking.

I have taken Miguels advice and ground out the casting circles and sprayed with undercoat and rust.

They now look much better. Having said that I saw a close up photograph of some Tiger I track which also showed casting marks, although smaller than the scale versions!

I then decided to get the spray gun in action and gave everything a quick base coat of dark Yellow.

It need another coat to look good, but is coming along well I think.

    Regards
    Tom

Here are a couple of photos of the spare tracks after grinding off the spue cast circles and spaying rust coloured.

Also the fuel tanks now with plasticard cladding. I still have work to carry out on the radiator cooling fan housing.

    But they provide an idea.

Great work Tom. Would never have thought about working on the engine. Really like how you made the fans.

Couple of pics of mine as it stands. Removed the smoke discharges and also the weld seem that goes across the top of the turret. Added the extra vents. Replaced the port on the left of the turret and also the escape hatch which I will put in place during the adding of of the zimmerit. Also removed the headlights as I will be adding a single later model to the front glacier plate. The other add ons will have to wait thanks to an expensive MOT, car tax and insurance:mad:

On another note, totally unexpected Grandad bought our 6 year old another Heng Long Tiger for Christmas. The newer versions appear to have made some improvements since my early model. The pistol ports are nore details, the hatch on the left of the turret is the right way round. The radio operators MG is nicer as is the overall colour. The only thing I don't know why they have added is large brackets either side of the storage tank on the rear of the turret.

    Dog Green,

Your battle scarred Tiger is coming along nicely. Is your zimmerit the rubber moulded set that you glue on?

I am enjoying this littler excursion into 1/16th scale :D

Hi Tom. I didn't come across the glue on zimmerit kits until after I'd started adding it:mad:. In the end I had to take the plunge and go for the old Miliput route. I didn't have a comb of any sort so used the blunt end of a craft knife which left the same size indentations as on the metal gun mantlet. It was simply a case of pressing into the miliput one indentation at a time in as neat a row as possible.

The glue on kits look OK but there was something strangely satisfying about doing it yourself. Plus it helped to pass an otherwise boring nightshift and gave the other lads on the shift something to talk about.

Today I also picked up the Heng Long Snow Leopard from an old customer for £10:D The smoke unit doesn't appear to work and the gun elevation needs looking at. Still for that price i couldn't say no. I'll either give it to the kids or sell it on to pay towards the Panther or Jagpanther.
