This is the source I mentioned for the 1st Battalion Hertfordshire Regiment in Italy. The book is entitled:

Hertfordshire Field Gazette - Italian Campaign Aug 1944-Jan 1945, Lt-Col G.W.H.Peters (Old Comrades Association, no date but c.1980s/90s).

Just to give an idea of what it contains:

Thanks for posting a few couple of pages from the field gazette, I looking forward to reading when it arrives.

I hope one day to visit the places mentioned in Italy, to get a better idea of the terrain, and certainly from what i've already seen from visiting Florence & Sienna, it must have been tough enough without the bad weather conditions.

Very tempted to specialise in researching a couple of Army units... 1st Btn Hertfordshire's & the 4th Btn Linconshire's (especially as my great uncle is allowing me to record some of his memories, and has asked me to do a few things - finding out if any other militia Pre-war veterans from the Lincolns are still alive or is he the only one left?).

    Regards

Have managed to find a copy of the book, then?

The 4th Lincs diary is a very good one for Normandy, and has a little pocket book in it with recommendations for hons/awards etc. I have copies of some of it, if there is anything specific you want?

    Hi Owen & Paul,

Yes I have seen the book "The Saturday Night Soldiers", I contacted the author of the book, as a lot of the photographs used were actually taken by my great uncle, and given to his friends in the regiment (so from his friends to the author, and then published).

He had a camera from Norway through to the end of the war, and was even acting as the 4th Btn Lincoln's photographer at one point. As you can imagine, he has some amazing pictures and memories.
My great uncle was in the anti-tank platoon, driving a "bren" carrier - but he said it was larger than a Bren unit.

I'll have to post his latest story that I recorded recently about the taking of le Havre.

As to the Field Gazette of the Hertfordshire's, the answer is yes... it cost only £15!

    Regards
    Paul
