    Hi Linda

    Welcome

The very first place for you to start your journey is by obtaining his military service records (if you havent already) and these can ONLY obtained from the MOD - the forms are in this link Request records of deceased service personnel for WW2 nowhere else has them despite what they might say on their tin, or web name

I have just received some back after posting the forms 3 weeks ago

Thank you! Yes I know I need to get these as I’m only finding limited information, I was initially unsure though as it states the information you receive could be very limited? So I’ve just been trying to google as much as possible for now, just looking through these feeds and finding small connections, it’s all interesting reading!

Dont worry about the details as such, I assume he died a while ago. If his wife is still alive then she can send off for them, or perhaps even your father. Just fill in the forms and send them off they arent the ogre people think them to be

You dont need service number etc, useful if you have it, but his copy death cert is most important and provides a date of birth

Hmm, don’t have a death certificate and none of those relations are alive, only my father and he doesn’t have an interest as I do. I know his service number and he was in road construction RE and died on the lancastria would that be enough information?

    Hi Linda,

If your Great Great Uncle was a casualty in WW2, then his CWGC details will be enough to apply for his records along with the appropriate forms. Good luck going forward.

    Linda,

Welcome to the board. I look forward to wading through the service records once you have them.

Even if you were to receive the bare minimum of information, it would likely still unlock several further avenues of investigation.

And many people here have received far beyond the minimum, so cross your fingers.

If you go to the CWGC page for him Casualty you can download what they call "Download commemorative certificate (PDF)" this you need to use in place of a death certificate, fill the rest of the forms and send themoff with a £30 cheque, and hopefully within a month you should have his service records back

It is attached below as well if you need

He is also noted on the Roll of Honour - Roll of honour | Lancastria Archive

On the National Archives site you will find a file WO 373/146/1 this is an awards file, however amongst it are eyewitness accounts of the Lancastria sinking which will provide you with some background. I was sent alink some time ago sadly this has now expired. The files are free to download.
Other files which other users on here might be able to source for you on their research visits are;-
With your relative being killed so early in the war the service records (unless a pre war regular soldier) on this occasion may be very basic.

Kyle - he was born in 1903ish (37 when he died) so he may may been in the Army pre war - dont know, the records will tell us

We have discussed the Lancastria many times on the forum. Here is one of the threads, it might have something for your research:

Thankyou so much I’ll approach the National archives today very much appreciated though I have tried for some but they wanted £133 for 111 (A3) pages in digi format and I haven’t a printer to take this so had to get my money back so I’ll write a snail Mail to them quoting this information if I may .

What I’m seeking people haven’t written have they , it’s all about the sinking and loss of life which I will talk about but not in depth I’m after what metal was used in the build, steel or iron ?what thickness was it ? The amount of weight caused by the personnel? The type of bombs used by the enemy and did they fly high or low and if high had to drop the bomb a mile out for it to fall onto the ship that sort of information and oh I’m seeking the maritime laws of 1940 to which in my research have found but writing to the legal department to see if I can use my finding.
