Does anyone know the names of the casualties in the sinking of this ship?

Of her complement of nearly 1600, only one rating was lost off Gibraltar in 36°06N, 5°07W.

To Merseysiders Ark Royal was "their ship" and when news came of her sinking it was a sad day for the folks of Liverpool, Birkenhead and Wallasey. One of my great boyhood experiences was being present when she moved down the slipway, at Cammell-Laird Ship-builders of Birkenhead, on to the River Mersey in April 1937.

Thanks Fidelity. I had a feeling that the casualties might be low given the time she took to sink.

This is where a CWGC search facility on units would come in handy. It wouldn't take long to identify him!

Perhaps someone does know his identity?

    Regards,
    David

I have found him! The only casualty from the sinking of HMS Ark Royal on 13 November 1941 was Able Seaman Edward Mitchell.

Thanks to SueL from The Great War Forum for drawing my attention to the website for the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

    Regards,
    David
