Hi, Can anuone tell me if Home Guard members would qualify for the Defence medal? And War Medal? Cheers SteveB
HG would qualify for the Defence Medal only if they had completed 3 years' service during its existence (1940-44), or else had joined in, say, 1942, and allowed themselves to remain on the HG 'reserve' awaiting further duties until the end of the War: anyhow, as a rule it was 3 years' service in the UK. I don't know if any awards outside of this were made to those killed or injured whilst on service (e.g. during bombing), but would be worth checking. They would not qualify for the War Medal, since that was only for full-time servicemen who completed 28 days' service (and at sea with Merchant Navy). The NZ Defence Force site has a medal section listing precise eligibility for WW2 awards; try a google search for this site. Richard
Cheers for the info Richard. ( And I look forward to buying off you on Speedbid soon, when I've finished my self-imposed ban!!!!)
NZ HG troops qualified for the War Medal and the Service to NZ Medal (39 -45) If active for three years, they also recieved the Defence Medal.
Hi, a similar query. Does anyone know whether members of the local fire brigades (which were taken into the National Fire service) had any entitlement to medals for their war time service? ta
Hi Manxman and welcome to the Forum, Firemen would be entitled to the Defence Medal under the same time conditions as the HG. However, I believe as with the county police forces, it was only for those working in areas that were bombed. I believe some brigades also made regional medals for war service. Richard
