David, there is only one way to go next. Family history can only be correct if documentary evidence ie certificates are obtained, you cannot work on internet searches from indexes etc.

I think that the child given away was quite likely the boy registered as Michael so I would start there. If it turns out adoption is involved then that is a whole new ball game.

To help us all I think you will need to post some of the certificates you have or we will go on speculating forever.

What I wanted to point out was the MOD have stated :

Without a death cert. they will not release his record until 116 years after his birthdate.

How do they know when his birth date is, in order to calculate the release date 116 years after it?

Hello everyone, I've ordered the birth cert for Michael Fenton born 1913 and it will be sent to me by PDF on Feb 12 so we' wont have long to wait! Can anyone find any trace of Michael Fenton born in that year after 1940? Perhaps if this in Leslie he went back to his original name after his problems with the Law. I would assume that the Army record dept would be able to see his date of bitrth on his record if they can find it. And if he did not die in action they wont release the record unless deth cert is produced or 116 years has passed since his birth.

    Best,

    David

    Genealogy / Re: Hill House
    « on: November 25, 2009, 07:45:21 PM »
With thanks to Derek Boughton of the Lyminge Historical Society:

Hill House was the Sanatorium attached to the what became the hospital in Westfield Lane at Etchinghill, a lot of births took place there. You should be aware that the sanatorium was originally part of the local workhouse and therefore, it may be possible that the mother was an inmate of the workhouse at the time of the birth. The workhouse formed part of the Union whose registration district was know a Elham District. As can be verified on an Ordnance Survey map, Etchinghill is a village some 4 - 5 miles south of Elham and forms part of Lyminge Parish not Elham Parish.

From a previous quote on a separate thread...
There were many Irish girls that came to England to escape the stigma of an illegitimate birth in their home village/town.
The more unusual aspect is why she turned up in Elham, many simply stayed at their arrival port of Liverpool. How and why she got as far as Elham or Lyminge may have something to do with a prior connection - but who/what that was might be a bigger mystery!

So Michael Fenton became Leslie Hayde (adopted privately?) - well, at least that bit has been tied down.

Kathleen had family, sister Mary Elizabeth born in India and two brothers there in Kent, Patrick and John Fenton. I'm not sure if one of them went there first or the others followed or they all went together. Mary Elizabeth Fenton married Harry C Mayne who perhaps was the connentio to Kent. The facts that we know would point to Michael Fenton becoming Leslie Hayde. I cant prove it but I think that this is the case and why there is no birth record for Leslie Hayde. I wonder if he was baptized soon after his birth..?

Feb 1913 Kathleen has a baby son, Michael in Elham Workhouse.
Mar 1914 she places newspaper ad for someone to raise him.
Presumably he's then taken in and raised as Leslie XXX
Then Kathleen marries Mr Hayde (and takes Michael/Leslie into the family?)
    1920 Doris E Hayde born.
1930's Leslie Hayde joins The Buffs (East Kent Reg't) becomes a noted cross country runner.
Charged with assaulting a woman (was this Kathleen who told him of his birth circumstances, or perhaps someone else, letting the family secret out?)
? Leaves Army (dishonourable discharge if convicted?)
1938 runs paper mill (till 1958)
    1948 Doris marries Mr Fitzsimmons
Kathleen/Katherine Hayde dies in Folkestone area in 1962, birth 1885. Vol 5b p624

    Is that the consensus?

I don't think anyone took him in after the ad, I think he stayed with his mother and when she married tom Hayde he became Leslie Hayde. I dont know where they got the name Leslie. Also I don't know if the girl he assaulted had/or said anything to do with Leslie's Parentage to bring the attack on. I don't know how long he ran for Paper Mill. the last I can find of his name mentioned is in the Feb 1938 issue of the Buffs Dragon magazine where he's seen running for Paper Mill and looking fit and well. I can't find anything published about him going to trial.. Were the charges dropped or he died or disappeared? not sure

Hello Everybody, does anyone have any ideas on ehst to try next or how to find out what happened to Private L Hayde after 1939? If he died why cant we find a death cert ?. Did he leave the country or change his name? His "adopted father" changed his to Moore when he married his 2nd wife Edith N Moore. Any helpful suggestions would be much appreciated.

    All the best,

    David
