I have to admit feeling very sympathetic towards Steve Smith this afternoon after watching his press conference. I just thought about all those other players that have got away with the same sort of thing in recent years, most especially of all the host of Pakistani players involved in various methods of cheating.

Still, this sort of thing needs dealing with the harshest of consequences administered.

The inevitable has just happened and Darren Lehmann is to resign at the end of this current test series.

I agree--it's possible to make some very poor decisions and not be a lost cause as a sportsman or a human being.

As to cheating, and you may call me starry eyed if you wish, but based on precedent I expect the Pakistanis to cheat on a semi-regular basis; what has made the Aussies such worthy adversaries over the years is that their passion for the game doesn't often overflow into deceit in the pursuit of victory. All teams try it on a bit--push the boundaries (if you'll pardon the pun)--but you expect the Aussies to keep it fair dinkum at the end of the day, which is why they're such a great cricketing nation.

Greg Chappell and his brother in '81 seems the obvious lapse to compare this with--the government voiced their shame then, too.

Bancroft claims he wasn’t tampering with de balls, rather he was trying to get de Kock out!

    That's the badger.

Hidden deception is a gamble: if caught, you pay the price and are exposed to oppropbrium, but in hiding it you are tacitly acknowledging the shamefulness of the action; tricks like that pea-roller are almost worse: you're publicly raising two fingers to the whole spirit of the game: it's like just leaning over the monopoly board, grabbing the stack of 500s and defying your opponents to find the line in the rule-book that forbids it.

    2003 - Warne banned for 1 year
    2018 - Warner banned for 1 year

Grammatically & Statistically speaking, in 2033, an Australian cricketer named Warnest should get a 1 year ban

We need to swap HQ to Edgbaston. Lords gives 10%+ to all opponents. But 85 all out versus Ireland!!!

With all that lovely warm weather you're having over there at the moment, I'd have though Lords would be playing like the WACA, not Rawalpindi.

Just heard about Bob Willis. A sad day for cricket.

Back in the 80's I entered a cricket competition on sky sports,First prize was a holiday in Australia following the England cricket team.
My name was pulled out of the hat by Bob for the runners up prize, which was a big sports bag containing cricket pads, gloves, and a cricket bat.
A brilliant bowler, RIP Bob Willis.

    Graham.
