HOLLAND, KENNETH CHRISTOPHER Sergeant 754503 152sq RAF 25/09/1940 20 Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve UK WEYMOUTH CREMATORIUM UK Dorset

    BOB
Sgt K.C.Holland of No 152 Squadron was killed on the 25th of September 1940 at 12:00hrs. His Spitfire I (N3173) was shot down while he was attacking a He 111 West of Bristol.

Kenneth Christopher Holland was born in 1920 in Sydney, New South Wales. In the mid-thirties he was living in Camelford, Cornwall in the care of a guardian, a Mr Ripley. He was at Airspeed Aeronautical College in 1936-37 and joined the RAFVR in 1939 as an Airman u/t Pilot. Called up at the outbreak of war, Holland completed his flying training and joined 152 Squadron at Acklington in June 1940.

On September 17th Holland shared in the destruction of a Ju88 and on the 19th he shot another down into the sea. On the 25th Holland attacked a He111 and set it on fire. Seeing a parachute, he went in for a closer look but was shot down by a gunner still in the stricken Heinkel. His Spitfire, N3173, crashed near Church Farm, Woolverton. Holland was found to have been shot in the head. The Heinkel crashed at Church Farm. The crew of four were killed, only the pilot baling out and being captured.

Holland was cremated at Weymouth Crematorium but the fate of his ashes is not recorded.

His guardian had a memorial stone placed near the site of the crash.

CAMERON, IVAN MCLEOD Wing Commander 24225 110sq RAF 28/09/1939 31 Royal Air Force UK 26. E. 6. REICHSWALD FOREST WAR CEMETERY GERMANY Kleve, Nordrhein-Westfalen

    Cameron I.JPG

Wing Commander Ivan McLeod Cameron (RAF)
Possibly the first Australian to have been "killed in action" was Wing Commander Ivan McLeod Cameron, who was serving with Britain's Royal Air Force (RAF) at the outbreak of war. Wing Commander Cameron, of 110 Squadron RAF, was on a reconnaissance flight over Germany on 28 September 1939 with the intention of investigating the Munster area when his Bristol Blenheim bomber, serial N6212, was intercepted and shot down by a German pilot, Feldwebel Klaus Faber, of l/JG I, Luftwaffe. The Blenheim crashed near Kiel, Germany. Wing Commander Cameron is buried at Reichswald Forest Cemetery, Kleve in Germany.

From the Melbourne Argus Newspaper, Monday 2nd October 1939.
BEALIBA, Sunday. - Relatives of Acting Wing-Commander Ivan McLeod Cameron have received a cable message from the British Ministry that he was reported missing after air operations on Thursday last.
Acting Wing-Commander Cameron, who was appointed to this position In September, 1938, was born at Bealiba in 1908. His father was the late Alexander Cameron, who owned the Bealiba sheep station, his Mother Isabel Louise Cameron nee Sawell, and the Rev. D. A. Cameron, a former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria, is an uncle.
Acting Wing-Commander Cameron was educated at the Maryborough High School and Geelong College. After spending several months with the R.A.A.F. in Victoria he left Australia for England in 1927 on a four years' short-term commission in the Royal Air Force. On completion of this term he spent two years with the R.A.F. doing his engineering course, and was then appointed permanently to the R.A.F. He was transferred to Iraq, where he spent two years, then returned to Australia, where he served for three months with a bomber transport squadron. He then returned to Iraq for 12 months, where he was transferred back to England and promoted to Squadron Leader.

Any further info including crew etc would be most welcome.

    Cheers

    Hi Geoff,

The notation of No.10 Sqn RAF is incorrect. They were all serving with No.10 Squadron RAAF which was training in the UK at the start of the war and was allowed to remain by the Aussie goverment to bolster the meagre capability of RAF Coastal Command.

Sunderland DP179 coded M for Mother took off from RAF Mount Batten on 02/10/43 at 23:15 hrs tasked with a Percussion L-2 patrol. Developed engine trouble at 07:47 hrs in position 48 05N 09 48W and was returning to base when they ditched 20 miles south of the Scilly Isles.
