Indian Army officer died in Tanganyika, 1948

Came across this inscription on his parents' gravestone, in Monton, Greater Manchester -
Richard Sibbald
(Major, Indian Army)
Beloved Husband of
Sylvia,
and only son of
Richard & Jean Brooks,
who died at Kongwa,
Tanganyika, Mar. 23rd 1948
aged 27 years.

It's not clear if he used Sibbald or Brooks as his surname, probably the latter. Did he have WW2 service, and was he still a serving officer at the time of his death?

 

His name was Richard Sibbald Brooks.
