All those that have been harvesting the indian Div short histories off archive.org seem to have missed this little gem that's been uploaded by the same bloke: E-in-C's ( India) Pamphlet No 10 (1943) Notes on the Organization of that Part of the Corps of Indian Engineers under the E.in.C. : G.H.Q. India : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive It's even got summary war establishments for a lot of the units. If anyone's registered with archive.org, feel free to put a good review his way in case he's got any more!
Really useful document, especially the bit from p38 onwards that classifies bridges and folding boat equipment as it explains a few things that often crop up in war diaries. Copied in just in case anyone is searching for bridge classifications in Burma diaries: Classification of Bridges and Vehicles Class 3 (Rafts) - Jeeps, cars, station wagons, carriers (wheeled), truck 15cwt., Amphibian Jeep, Dodge 1/2 ton. Class 5 - Lorries 30cwt., Fd.Arty., Armd.Carriers (tracked), Lt.Tk.Mk.VI (3 men). Ford Scout Car. Class 9 - Lorries 3-ton, Workshop Lorries, Lt.Tk.Mk.VII (Tetrach), Armd.G.P.Vehicles, Amphibian 2 1/2 ton DUKW, Armoured Personnel Truck. Class 12 - Lorries 6·ton. Armoured Command Vehicle. Class 18 - Lorries 10.ton, Med.Arty., Cruiser Tks.Mk.VI (Crusader). Inf.Tks.Mk.III(Valentine), American Lt.Cruiser Tk.(Gen.Stuart). Still not entirely sure what 'class' refers to in relation to this, though. Does 'Class 3' mean it can bear a maximum load of 3 tons at once, for example? In section 6.3 on p42 (Small boats and outboard motors) it describes the recce boat as a two-man inflatable rubber boat that is 'likely to be superseded by Ranger Boat No. 3'. I've seen references to Ranger boats in 1944/45 diaries from the Burma Campaign but I've never been able to track down any detail on them at all. Does anyone know anything about them?
