The Infantry Training Centre's is not a subject i've looked at before in WWII, is the training centre Regiment based or is it a national training area?

My grandfather originally joined the Suffolk Regiment on the 18th December 1941, and was based at No. 3 ITC until being transferred on 15th April 1942 to the Hertfordshire Regiment.

Why would he have been at the ITC for so long?

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Regards
    Paul

    Hi Paul,

ITCs were/are located in areas, as were/are RTR Training Regiments, suitable for training purposes. My guess would be that your grandfather suffered an injury requiring hospitalisation.

    All the best,
    Gerry

Thanks Gerry, I'll look up the Suffolk Regiment ITC (Probably somewhere like Bury St. Edmunds), but my grandfather's service record makes no mention of any injuries, only training & a training request that was denied.

1941.08.14 Regtal Dists closed, and Infantry Training Centres formed at command level:
No. 1 Infantry Training Centre at Warley (R Fusiliers, Essex Regt)
No. 2 Infantry Training Centre at Norwich (Norfolk Regt, Northamptonshire Regt)
No. 3 Infantry Training Centre at Bury St. Edmunds (Suffolk Regt, Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regt)
So 3 ITC fed both regiments.

    Thanks Owen D,

The interesting thing is that my grandfather was married in 1942, and on that document it states he was in the Suffolk Regiment at the time, and then on 15/04/1942 he was posted to the Hertfordshire Regiment.

So that information fits in nicely.

    Regards
    Paul

That's very interesting Owen! Do you have anything on 16 ITC and who they supplied?
