I've been working through my paybooks to wounded men trying to put into context where they were when wounded and what their units were doing and in most I have managed to at least get a rough idea but I'm struggling with 5 so I'm hoping fellow members can help (War Diaries would be ideal) - so here goes, looking for info on

Inns of Court Regiment 14/9/44 when E B Wallington was wounded, I'm thinking Belgium but that's as far as I've got

    Thanks

    Alistair

p.s. apologies that the basics of the posts will be cut and paste

They took part in Operation Astonia (Capture of Le Havre) 10-12 September 1944. 1 Corps with 49 & 51 Divisions under command, would still have been in France on 14 September 1944.

63 Trucks of my Dad's Regiment helped move 630 men of 146 Brigade (49 Division) from St. Romain on the 19th September. They then helped transport men of 51 Highland Division on 25th September 1944, 51 HD having already recaptured St. Valery-en-Caux earlier that month.

1 Corps moved to Belgium, via Brussels on 22 September 1944.

Thanks for that, the fact they were Corps troops isn't a help as that gives a large area - Divisional troops you can usually narrow down a lot easier.

I have just been reading about Le Havre too in "Tank Twins", I'll get digging into it a bit more

    Thanks again

I agree, as they would have been attached to other units. We need a copy that War Diary, and that won't happen any time soon. :blank:

Or the Regimental History, that may help - the issue (with War Diary or history) could be if they were split across a number of jobs at the time

Do you know which squadron he was? That might narrow it down a bit.

Afraid not, the books gives away very little

It'll be the war diaries, then, if anything.

The Devil's Own barely mentions patrol activities along the Meuse-Escaut canal in that period.

Needs Must has a little more detail:

If he happened to be C Sqn there is one more possible non-WD source - if I can find it...

That's a good starter to allow me to put a fairly general note with it - one day I'll get the War Diary which, but my list of WD's that I'm after is quite long

    Cheers

    Hi.
Late to the party with this one, just incase you didn’t get to the bottom of it…
I can only offer a strong suggestion of Neerpelt. In the “Taurus Pursuant” book it lists all KiA of the Div. Under the Inns of Court Regt it has a Sergeant L Silver as KiA at Neerpelt on 14/09/1944
