This is one of those war films that few people have heard of and yet fully deserves a wider audience. Intimate Enemies is set in the mountains of Algeria in 1959 and centers around a young French Lieutenant and his platoon based at an outpost from where they set out on patrols to engage the FLN. Being new to the conflict the Lieutenant starts off with an idealistic intent while his men, having already experienced much of the conflict, have no such illusions in how the war is being fought by both sides. As his experience grows the Lieutenant becomes disillusioned.
This is a film that doesn't shy away from the darker side of that conflict with both sides committing atrocities and torture upon the other.
It is a French Language film with English subtitles, well written and filmed with some powerful scenes including the napalm attack.
