Did a search for shingle street and came across a website that tries to say the Germans tried to invade along the Suffolk coast, rumours to that effect were always rife during my childhood. My Father always believed it was "covered up" he recalls retrieving badly burned bodies with german uniform from the coastal area whilst serving with Liverpool Scottish on coastal guard. The rumour being that we set fire to the sea. Shingle street was evacuated of all civilians during the war. Tons of shingle on the beach was moved, remnants of the British Army being there still exist to-day. Anyone know more?

As regard setting fire to the sea, there were definitely projectors in place that were designed to temporarily ignite the coastal sea (via underwater pipes) at points where an invasion was thought likely. As regards German attacks I know nothing other than E-boot sorties, could it have been one of them?. (looking forward to hearing more though) Maybe a realistic exercise that went awry? there were certainly many of these and 'hushing up' was often the order of the day..

AS one that was around at that time. There was never a bungled attempt at an invasion, nor did the enemy at any other time, lay foot on British Soil.
Its, a nice story entirely without foundation. if there were any truth in it, Then it would have surfaced under the thirty year rule.
Its a fairy tale, Or wishful thinking for someone who wants to beleive it.Sorry!

Shingle street papers were due to be released in the early 70's but were placed under another closed order (I think for something like another 15 years) and then another 15 years, finally released i think in 2001. Haven't had a chance to get to Kew to view them, something else to go on the "must do list". Anyway if anyones interested the site is www.shford.fslife.co.uk/shinglest/ Might get a few more reactions! Its quite an interesting site content wise.

    interesting site.
seems the burial pits (if they exist) are the best hard evidence that could be found. As it's right by Orford Ness couldn't there be some connection with the various 'goings on' there, maybe even accidents and the like?

A common story. Several books rip this legend apart. The Germans never tried it.

Why on earth would the British cover up the news that the Germans had tried to invade but had been defeated. I've heard of attempts to cover up defeats but never a victory.

there are a lot of "if's". If there were any truth in the story, I assume it would be covered up because of the means of death, i.e. incinerating your enemy, would the Brtish populace have been ready for that? Probably start a whole new discussion now, lol

Any way it has provoked some chat. cheers.

Shingle street has been going the rounds for years now, and there isn't a single piece of evidence to back it up.
Its complete and utter bollocks !!!:mad111:

Utter and complete nonesense..There was no invasion.... First thing anyone should ask is this,,,Any craft approaching the English coast would be picked up on Radar, and no Germans was going to get anywhere near, the Navy would have sunk the lot before they even left the enemy coast... Everywhere in Britain we had a coasr watch......Everywhere!

Pretty story utter rubbish! No enemy ever set foot on British soil in an invasion........never! Besides it would be impossible to keep it quiet for long. beleive me!

Maybe I can bring this up again from my thread
    http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/uk-home-front/6286-4th-wilts-soldier-captured-e-boat.html

4th Wilts soldier captured by E-boat crew.
Reading "Private Young's War" by Geoff Young.
Their first loss to the enemy wasn't when they got to Normandy but years earlier when guarding the Kent coast at Kingsdown in the Deal area.
    Quote,
" It was while we were here that one of our soldiers suddenly disappeared whilst on sentry duty. The idea that he had just deserted would have been completely out of character for him.But missing he was and the affair remained a mystery until Lord Haw-Haw - the name given to the Nazi propaganda broadcaster - announced in one of his broadcasts that a soldier - he actually named him - of the 4th Wilts had been captured and was now a prisoner of war in Germany. it was later confirmed that a German E Boat had landed a snatch party at Kingsdown, intent on taking a prisoner."

I'd love to know who the chap was and did he survive the War ?
Anyone else come across reports of E-Boat snatch squads?

    Hello psywar,
I know your site well! very good stuff.
The article looks good but it's going to take more than a cursory read.
I'd heartily reccomend anyone who's not seen it to check out the site, the propaganda leaflets alone (1914-2005!) are well worth the visit.
    Cheers,
    Adam.

Hi and welcome the the forum.

Quite a interesting theory you have there. I was always under the impression should the invasion come it wouold be from the South not the East.

Have you seen the files at Kew that you mention?

    Hi Derfla, welcome aboard.
Hope it's OK, but I merged your shingle street thread with an existing one.

    Cheers,
    Adam.

(I'm sure there's a thread or two more around on the same subject)
