Hi Pete, thanks for posting, duly added to the list.
By any chance do you have photos from his time in the Micks?

    Hi Mark,
Welcome to the forum, your Dad's details duly added.

Do you have any stories or photos of his time in the Micks?

    Thanks.

He has got quite a few stories. He is 93 now but he is sharp as a pin.

I think was his tank which he was wounded in Wistedt. He was the driver. He disputes the date and says it was the day before (21st) but I'm not sure.

I also have a photo of his tank sitting in the field where it was knocked out. Apparently children played on and around it after the war as it was not cleared for a few years.

The number on it, 288475, matches the damage report above.

This is him in his squad at Guards Depot. And a postcard he has of the handing over of tanks by the Guards Armoured Division.

I will try and find out more and if he is willing to have some of his memories posted here.

    Hi Mark,

Thanks for sharing the photos and greetings to you and your father. My Dad served in 1 Coy, 3rd Bn and had some good mates in the 2nd Armd, trained in the same squad as Jimmy Mendes DCM who got his award for the 21st at Wistedt. A very important date in Mick history as you are surely aware.

So, I would take that date on the report with a pinch of salt. It was compiled by two doctors from RAMC who did their best but had to rely on info supplied to them, sometimes 3rd or 4th hand, from Troop/Squadron leaders and even from Echelon. The report isn't free from the usual typos (including mine) or from unit ID errors. In other words the good doctors' focus was on the tank and the crew and the circumstances rather than the dates and other details.

Smashing that you could match his tank up with the report.

Could you tell me the names of your Dad's crew, I'm always on the look out for extra details such as that?

    Hi
Thanks for posting and sharing. I've edited in your youtube link, what an interesting journey of discovery you made.

Your Dad and mine must have trained at the same time, their Army numbers are only a dozen or so apart. My father served with the 3rd Bn., from Normandy onwards.

Sadly there was no photo of the tank with this entry from one file in the archives, probably contains a ref to L/Cpl Unwin:

Ref Westertimke - after the war Dad joined the Merchant Navy and served on one ship with a man who'd been at Westertimke and who remembered the Guards liberating the camp.

As mentioned in your video, in a complete turn-around post hostilities Westertimke ended up being guarded by the Micks when it became a camp for SS prisoners. Dad confirmed he spent some time up in one of the towers.

Here's another photo from the IG Journal showing a guard tower in the background...(my father circled)

Thanks for all the information and sharing my Dad's film. I have shown your reply to him and it brought many memories back. In the film I make reference to his burying Sgt Kenwright who was killed on April 2nd, 1945. I have found the Warrington Guardian announcement of his death and am trying to contact family members. There is a chance one of his siblings is still alive. How amazing it would be if I could make that connection.

One thing I meant to mention was about Mick O'Cock's photograph. My Dad still has a pass out slip signed by Mick for 2 days leave in Brussels in 1945. I included it in the film.

    Hi Chris,
I noticed that pass. My father had very fond memories of Mick O'Cock, not only from during the war but after.

Dad and his mate Henry had just sent two POWs back down the line, an officer and his NCO - minus their watches and personal weapons, and possibly a few other things that took their fancy. The German officer marched up to Mick O'Cock who was the first IG officer he saw, saluted and then started remonstrating and pointing back towards Dad. 'Oh-oh, we're for it' said his mate. Mick O'Cock was leaning up against his tank smoking, but in one fluid movement he pushed himself off the tank, threw the cigarette on the ground and punched the German officer who collapsed to the ground. He then looked back up at Dad, smiled and winked

Mick O'Cock was the officer commanding at Armagh Barracks just before Dad got demobbed and Dad last saw him during an Association dinner in the 1970s. It was there that Dad went up to the officers present and asked to shake the hand of 'the best officer he'd ever served with'. Mick O'Cock beamed when Dad took his hand.

Post a separate thread on here to see if you can trace relatives; there are plenty of previous success stories on here. I was lucky to make contact on Dad's behalf with the family of another training squad mate of his who was killed during Market Garden. Dad also buried his friend, along with some others from the 2nd Bn killed at the same time.

    My regards to your father.

Do you have any photos you could share on the thread - training squad ones are particularly sought-after by other family researchers.
