Hi Trux, hopefully you're still around. Firstly thanks for all your efforts on this thread and obviously all the others, absolutely outstanding contribution.
However, there is one typo I've found! On your description of units of the 8 Beach Group you state "C company of the 5th Kings", it should read "8th Kings". Think you were getting your Sword and Juno beaches muddled ;-)
On that note you may have stumbled on some of my previous enquires as I'm trying to match my Grandfathers memoires with the 'facts' around today. As a family we always understood that he landed on D-day itself and his memoires support this, sort off. But atm the facts are pointing towards D+1, hence the research I'm trying to do.

He was Sgt Robert Charles Cheeseman CQMS of 'C' Company 8th Kings. The 'fact's have the bulk of 'C' Company landing on D+1 on Nan via the LSP Lancashire, however from his memoires grandad left the Thames on the LSP Cheshire. My feeling is that as CQMS he would have been in a recce party and it's interesting to note that A & B company recce parties are listing on the Mike landing tables but alas I haven't been able to find a C company recce party listed.
Because Juno beach is split by the river I would expect him to land on the Nan sector especially as the Company have been assigned duties with the 14 OBD.

I noticed in your listing of units for 8 Beach group on Nan you listed

    '8 Kings Regiment. 14 men. 4 vehicles.'

Do you have anyone details as to the make up of these as I can't equate these figures with those in the Landing tables for D-day, best I can find is 8 men and a 3 tonner landing from LTIN1560 for the 8 kings on Nan Red

Thanks for any help you can give

  2. Richard,

Did you get Captain Lawrence's report as recommended by Danny in his post #150 above, and if so does it give any hint as to what you are looking for?

ETA for Convoy ETP1 (which included CHESHIRE & LANCASHIRE) was 0700 D+1.

Hi Michel yes I have Capt Lawrence's transcript (and others). The interesting thing is that I get the impression that the Lancaster (and presumably the Cheshire) were actually standing off the beaches on D-day. My 'hope' is that Grandad cross decked to another craft somewhere along the way as his memoires suggest he landed on D-day as we've always understood as a family he did.

Capt Lawrence's description of the day does also differ to my grandads memoires.

Capt Lawrence - The sight which greeted us was not what we had expected. The beach had been cleared remarkably well and it had all the appearance of an exercise at STUDLAND BAY except for a few smashed landing craft.

Grandad - It was daylight now and everything was plain to see ashore, several craft had been hit from the assualt chaps, Marine Commandos and Canadians lying inside them all dead. We were now up to the beach, firing had nearly stopped from the beach, the assualt troops having advanced some mile forwards and now it was our turn,....

Anyway, I'll keep searching. Fortunately military history is a great interest to me so it's not exactly a hardship lol.

    Thanks for your interest

    Richard

    Hello again Mike,
I’m off to Normandy in a few weeks to pay my respects at Juno beach (amongst other places) and wondered if you may know of where I could get a copy of the battle report for flotilla 516 at Mike Red sector on Junk beach on D-Day please? Regards, Julie

  7. Hello Julie,

Unfortunately no report from 516 Assault Flotilla nor from their mother ship Lairds Isle is included in the Enclosures to the Naval Reports, and I do not know if it has survived or where to find it.

The D Day Museum in Portsmouth (now calling itself "The D-Day Story") might have relevant documents in its archives though. Only a small part of what they have is listed in their website here:
    Collection: Archives

so you should ask them for help in finding docs related to Lairds Isle, 516 Assault Flotilla and/or its individual LCA.

Thank you so much for your reply. I will get in touch with the museum to see if they have any more info. There was something else which was put on here a while ago from either yourself or another guy called Mike? It was a copy of a war diary which related to B Company (Royal Winnipeg Rifles) which I believe were landed by my grandads flotilla which is really informative, so I just thought that I would ask the question.
    thank you so much again.

    Hello all,
My father landed on Juno beach on 27th June (delayed by the storm in the channel). His regiment (86th anti-tank RA) sailed in a convoy (made up of LST’s 78,79 & 80) from the Thames Estuary and landed at Courseulles. Is this too late to have been documented in the tables?
A fabulous thread and a fascinating read- many thanks to all who have contributed!
    Jane.

  10. Hello Jane,

There must be a mistake here, because LST 78 only saw service in the Pacific. See Tank Landing Ship LST

Can you tell us your source for the three LST numbers you mention? I feel they must be some sort of serial or fleet numbers rather than hull numbers.

    Hello Michel,
Interesting! The source is the 86th anti tank regiment’s war diaries. The regiment arrived at the marshalling area (Tilbury Docks) on 19th June but the storm meant they couldn’t sail until the 26th.
    Any information is gratefully received!
    Jane.

Good Day everyone. The following information are UPDATES to Trux’s information on this thread. These are from the 2 May 1944 Landing Tables of the 8th Canadian Infantry Brigade, and are mainly complete amendments to Group 333 (LST’s).

The information is completely different that the 14 Apr !944 tables of these serials. Also because of the changes some of the Serial Numbers have changed for LTIN’s following this, for example, HMS Northway was Serial 1565 in the Apr 1944 documents and is now 1566 in these documents.

I’ve “tried” to keep the format of the information the same way as Trux originally posted it, so that you can cut and paste this into the information (if you have kept a copy for yourselves). If I’ve done something incorrect or something doesn’t make sense (as I tried to review the work to other pages in Trux’s work)…..let me know and I will correct

    LST's - from Group 332 & 333

    Thank you very much indeed.

These tables give a lot of detail regarding the vehicles. Very useful. CMP vehicles are one of my main interests and I have a cupboard full of 1:76 scale models of them (most from the old Trux range).

    Hello Michell,
You were kind enough to help me sometime ago and as a result, I went to Mike Red sector on the 6th June this year to commemorate my grandfathers participation on D-Day so thank you so much again.
I went to visit a WW2 veteran last week who was an armourer in the RAF and he landed at Juno beach on D-Day + 3 with the Canadians. He doesn’t recall the sector, only that there was a cornfield nearby. Would anyone be able to recognise the section of Juno that was next to a cornfield? Thank you in advance, Julie

While researching the 1st Bn, Canadian Scottish Regiment, I came across these documents (which I don’t believe I’ve seen on this site, or others for that matter)…..so thought I would post it, as it has names of some units that were aboard HMCS Prince Henry for the D - Day landings. I don’t believe this would be the full list, but is some of the units that were aboard (including Parts of the 1st Bn, Canadian Scottish Regiment

1st Battalion, Canadian Scottish Regiment - War Diary Jun 1944 - Marching/Vehicle Parties

Tables from Jun War Diaries of CSR, planning for Marching and Vehicle Parties for Operation Overlord, tables include assigned duties of all members of the Regiment

The pages below were actually 3 documents. A & B Companies, C & D Companies and Support Company. I had to copy them as attached in order for the information to be readable and useable

  17. Fantastic find!
The complete roll with assigned duties is also a gem. I wish such detailed data had been preserved for other units/serials too.
The Embarkation Lists for PRINCE HENRY looks pretty much complete if we compare them with the Landing Tables for Serial J20 (LTINs 1096-1103 and 1163):
    T-7620 - 0202 - 7 CIB Gp LT 3 May 44 - Sheet No 14 - 1090-1103.jpg
    T-7620 - 0266 - 7 CIB Gp LT 3 May 44 - Sheet No 78 of 78 - 1162-1163.jpg

They appears to list the Other Ranks but not the Officers. I suspect that by comparing them with the 1 C Scot R Roll we might deduce who were the officers embarked.

  18. Further to my previous post I did some checking of the PRINCE HENRY Embarkation List against the Roll and the Landing Table. The Landing Table says there should be 19 men (all ranks) from Bn HQ and 127 men from the rest of the Bn, for a total of 146 all ranks, compared with 139 OR in the Embarkation List, which should mean there were 7 offrs embarked.

All OR of "B" Coy are embarked (except the four who are listed in the Roll as Vehicle parties, who incidentally are part of the six struck off the Embarkation List), and we must presume that all its five officers also are:
    Coy Comd Maj RM LENDRUM
    Coy 2i/c Capt PF RAMSAY
No.10 Pl Comd Lt JH RUSSELL
No.11 Pl Comd Lt SR ROSS
No.12 Pl Comd Lt IP MACDONALD

This would give a total of 118 all ranks (113 OR + 5 offrs) from B Coy. There should remain 2 offrs embarked.

We know from the War Diary that the Bn 2i/c (Maj Cyril WIGHTMAN) landed with "B" Coy, so there remains only one officer to be identified.

Of the remaining 26 OR in the Embarkation List, 5 are from Sp Coy (all from Coy HQ) and I could identify 3 from HQ Coy and 2 or 3 from Bn HQ (from the June Cas List, because we unfortunately do not have the Roll for these). My guess is that the sole remaining member of Sp Coy HQ, i.e. Coy Comd Capt LS HENDERSON was also embarked and is this last officer we are looking for.
