    Gents,

Any idea what this unit could be?

    Kdo 2 Funkomponbtrihung

Funk is wireless, so I guess it could be a signal unit. Personnel from it were based at Phare D'Alliy Lighthouse west of Dieppe and one is listed as being killed on 19th August 1942.

    Regards,

    Steve

My guess: This could be a corrupted transcription of "abteilung" (Abteilung = detachment/branch/squad) i.e. a smaller (specialized) unit

You could be right it is from a handwritten casualty report, which is pretty hard to read.

    Funkomponabteilung... ?

    Funk- ompon - abteilung

"ompon" does not make any sense.

    "ortung" would be detection

"Funkortung" would be direction finding or radio location

This is a common error, in the Wehrmacht Abteilung was actually just another term for battalion. It depended on the branch of service whether the term was ‘Bataillon’ or ‘Abteilung’.

A Radio location unit would make sense. I believe the naval unit based at the lighthouse had that role.

    I think it is: Funkmeßabteilung

The German letter "ß" nowadays has in many cases been replaced by "ss" - so today the spelling would be "Funkmessabteilung"

Basically "Funkmesstechnik" at the time was the German term for "radar"

Elements of 2./Fu.M.Abt. were stationed there, running a "FuMO 214 Würzburg-Riese
    (Ozet 533)" and a "FuMO 2 Calais (Ozet 532)".

I understand this was a unit of the German Navy

The role was "Seetaktische Funkmeßortung" which I believe is the detection of ships.

Ailly lighthouse was the OP for the Heeres-Küsten-Artillerie including Batterie 813/Varengeville

    With due German thoroughness:
Anlage 731, FuMo "Marg 02", Teile 2./Fu.M.Abt, Seetaktische Funkmeßortung,
    1 x FuMO 214 Würzburg-Riese (Ozet 533)
    1 x FuMO 2 Calais (Ozet 532)

The arty was subordinated to the Heer, the observers were Kriegsmarine (the usual wrangling over competences)
seetaktische Funkmeßortung/ maritime tactical Radar detection is in fact detection and range-finding for the guns

    KRIEGSMARINE RADAR

    Cheers Gents,

The Kriegsmarine had 1 Officer and 54 OR based at the lighthouse, presumably all from 2./Fu.M.Abt.

The casualty return was odd, because the German naval report doesn't mention any casualties being suffered by this detachment, so I wondered if the unit had been a Luftwaffe one (10 OR also being based there).
