King's Own Scottish Borderers

Discussion in 'British Army Units - Others' started by Edoardo Maria Dallavalle, Mar 4, 2014.

  1. Good Morning, i've recently found the service dress of a captain of the King's Own Scottish Borderers. Inside the jacket i've found a label of the productor with the name of the officer: Major F.A. Dunball or Dumball (the words are colorless) and his army number: 47791. Is it possibile to fine something about his service during the ww2? Later i'll post some photos of the uniform.

    Best regards

    Edoardo Maria Dallavalle

He's not listed on CWGC so he survived the war for starters.

  3. He is awarded with
    1939 - 1945 Star
    France and Germany Star
    Defence Medal
    War Medal 1939-1945

  4. His name might also be Rumball or Runball... I'll post soon a photo of the Label...

That names not listed either. I've just checked the Borderers in Battle - The Story of the King's Own Scottish Borderers by Gunning and he's not listed in the index. I suspect your next best bet would be the London Gazette:

Search for him on London Gazette website.

You should be able to find out when he was Commissioned.
Had a quick search using that number but found men with different names.

  7. Very strange, the words on the Label looks old, why Simeone should have written nonsense words on a ww2 uniform?

Edoardo - How do you know from the uniform about these medals, I presume they are 'ribbons' on the left breast??

Some guess's on my part - if that is so then this uniform would have been left in Italy? after 1945. We can also deduct that as there is no 'Italy Star' that this person did not serve in Italy during the war, except perhaps after the war in some capacity. Feel free to shoot them down :(

Hope the photos are posted soon :)

    (Excited) I do believe that's 1940 :D

  16. Yes, March or May 1940, but what's the word between army number and date?

Well I can tell you he was not in the 1st Battalion KOSB's during 1940. The other two war diaries I have for the BEF do not have a officers field return in them so I can't confirm either way.

  18. Ok, i've also wrote an e-mail to the regimental Museum, hoping For an answer... Do you think that the jacket could be a fake?
