RIP Peter O'Toole One of the great icons of the film industry passed away on Saturday the 14th December at the age of 81. I could do no better than give a link to the trailer of his greatest film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3tuBFHuYV4 I am reminded that many years ago on a holiday in Andalusia my wife & I visited Seville and I made a point of visiting Plaza Di Espana where the scene of the officer's club in Cairo was filmed. Well done Peter !................... pity they never gave you an Oscar. Ron ps The full film on youtube here (in 2 parts) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ33gYBFDnE
Noel Coward is rumored to have said, on seeing the premiere, "If he'd been any prettier, they'd have had to call it Florence of Arabia." Gus
I have always enjoyed his unique acting style and larger than life personality. If there is ever a film on the telly staring the likes of O'Toole, Burton or Richard Harris, I tend to watch. RIP Peter O'Toole.
Lawrence grave is in the village of Morton, where the local church was bombed during the war. The rebuilt windows are etched in the glass by Whistler, and are truly beautiful to see. And very unusual indeed. Hi Ron
He created many arresting characters that you could not always love, but could not tear your eyes away from either.
And the wooden cross that was sent from Arabia is at the end of the separate cemetery at Morton, also worth a visit, Roy originally from nearby Wool
Facebook - Ashmolean Museum T. E. Lawrence, also known as Lawrence of Arabia, died #onthisday in 1935. We hold robes worn by Lawrence while he was with the Arab army, along with Lawrence’s sandals, a gold ring set with a white sapphire, and a dagger (khanjar) with gold filigree handle in our collection. Lawrence began his career in the Middle East as an archaeologist and is renowned especially for his role as a liaison officer during the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Turks from 1916. His major work is Seven Pillars of Wisdom, an account of his war experiences, mostly written while he was a fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. All objects on display in the Museum are on loan from All Souls College.
Visiting the grave should be a compulsory side trip when visiting Bovington. The cemetery is just a few miles down the road from Bovington on the outskirts of the village (and not near the Church!).
But don't forget to visit the church. Totally unique and beautiful etched windows by Laurence Whistler (Rex Whistler's brother)
BBC World Service - The Forum, Lawrence of Arabia 41mins - BBC - World Service Audio - (from 2018) "T.E Lawrence was a British scholar and adventurer whose involvement with the Arab Revolt during the World War One inspired one of the most celebrated films in cinema history. So how did a man who was offered a knighthood and became an international celebrity end his days in near obscurity? Bridget Kendall is joined by historians James Barr and Juliette Desplat, and writer Scott Anderson to discuss his life and legacy."
