In the course of some research i am doing at the moment i need to try and find out what the duties would have been for an A/Leading Naval Airman in the Second World War in the Royal Navy.
Also what would an Observer in the Fleet Air Arm have done.
I have a relative who was both of these and was wondering if he would have flown and if so in what type of planes ?

Hope someone out there can help
    Thanks

Observer would have been aircrew. In FAA could have flown in Fairy Swordfish and later in the war in two-seat-plus aircraft then in service.

leading airman was a rank. it was the same as a leading hand or "kilik"

Observer was a other name for a navigator, in the RAF it was differtent again.

They Would have flown in any multi-crewed aircraft.

However, given his rank could he not have been a Telegraphist Air gunner, first, then observer? As observers were normally POs and above.
