I'm Trying to help a friend with some research on his Grandfather who was awarded the DSM for action at Dieppe - is there a way to get the citation?

    Thanks

    Alistair

Edited to correct the award (thanks CL1)

Well spotted Clive, that's what happens when you type a post while having a separate conversation.

I'm also trying to understand his number, I think the C may be Chatham and the X is an enlistment after they started a new pay code (early 30's from what I've seen), but the TD has me stumped I think it should be his trade.

    Thanks

    Alistair,

I am pretty sure that number is not regular RN but RNVR therefore your assumptions are probably incorrect.

    Hi,
It doesnt surprise me, RN numbers seem complicated enough for me - I didnt realise RNVR gave another twist - any suggestions to what it does tell us would be useful, google isnt being my friend (especially with so many random sites being blocked at work).

    Thanks

Difficult really Alistair. Not a lot known about them - you can find info on WW1 RNVR and for WW2 officers, but ratings very little.

I have just been looking here (http://www.unithistories.com/officers/RN_Decorations.html#F - which covers RN & RNVR of all ranks from a general look) and there is no Ellis, however the site creator does say that it is not 100% and that he may be able to help if you email them - might be worth a try.

Definitely Tyne Division. His Service Number tells us that he had enrolled in the RNVR before the outbreak of WW2. Agree with the C and X. After outbreak almost all Naval Ratings signed were engaged as HO Hostilities Only with RN style numbers and most Officers were commissioned into the RNVR. Hope this helps.
