    Hello,
My grandfather escaped from a prison camp in Italy probably Laterina. I know he crossed the English lines and was taken over by the 2nd Moroccan GOUM on May 17, 1944 in Cavilliano. On the 5th of July he joins the 13th DBLE.
But I can't find this place. It may be a mistake.
    Do you have any ideas?
    Thank you
    Estelle

    Estelle.

The French Expeditionary Corps was in the area of Castelforte/Ventosa and on top of Monte Damiano when the Allied attack on the Gustav Line started on the night of 11 May 44.

The Corps very quickly overcame German resistance and pushed into the Ausonia Valley.

I think that that is the area that you need to be looking in.

    Regards

    Hello Frank,
    Thanks for the precision.
I think the place was badly copied and that instead of CAVILLIANO you have to read GARIGLIANO. In the file that I have attached it is also written the prison camp of CAPONA but it is surely CAPOUA.
I'm going to go to SHD de Vincennes to look at the archives and the JMO (journaux des marches et opérations) of the French Expeditionary Corps.
Same for the 2nd GOUM I think we should rather look to the 1st GTM (composed of the 2nd Tabor) or the 2nd DIM and the 4th DMM (composed of the 2nd RTM).
I hope it will be noted that a Moroccan regiment has recovered fugitives from the Italian prison camps.
    Regards,
    Estelle
