    Hi guys and Gals.
For the first time on our lifes myself and herself are going on a holiday for a week in June to London. I intend to spend a lot of time in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Imperial War Museum of course. I dont want to stay at a top hotel. Can anyone suggest what would be the best and most reasonable pleace to stay., what transport to use, what else to see and of course how to get to one of the Great English car boot sales from there and back.
We have never been away before and this will be a new experience. Can we book flights online and accomodation? We live in Ireland.
    Totally open to all suggestions.
    Regards.
    Tom.

    Tom,
You can book flights on-line with Ryan Air, Dublin to Gatwick.
Ryanair.com - CHEAP FLIGHTS - Fly Cheaper, Car hire, Hotels, Travel Insurance

Look for cheap hotels on lastminute.com
Hotels - cheap accommodation and discount hotel reservations from lastminute.com
I'd stay on the outskirts of London and travel in by Tube or train. When we go to London , we leave car at my Uncle's in Surrey and go up to Waterloo, very cheap.

Get a map of London Underground.

    Enjoy yourselves.

tom, get onto the London Tourist Information Centre as well. They'll be able to tell you about places to visit that aren't on the normal tourist routes. Also advice on accomodation in and around if you can't find what you want, and I think you can buy the musuem passes from them as well.
And be aware NEVER let your wife carry a handbag. Bare minimum of stuff. Keep change in one pocket, notes in another and all cards in a third pocket otherwise you'll lose the lot. You're a tourist, they'll target you. Just be sensible.
And take lots and lots of pictures for us.

A few things I like in London:
    National Army Museum.
    Hendon.
    HMS Belfast.
Statues of Alanbrooke, Slim & Monty in Whitehall.
Greenwich (take a boat there from the embankment, wonderful compressed history down that bit of river and enjoy the best view of the capital bar none from the top of the hill, maritime museum a bit thin imo but the Royal observatory is good, particularly Harrisons Chronometers, one of the great treasures of the city and absolutely fascinating in the flesh.)
I'm told the trips down the Thames in a DUKW are off at the moment but it may be back in the water. (Wouldn't you like to buy one of those... ;))
& If you fancy going on the London eye make sure you book in advance rather than queue for hours.
Have a good one & travelcards'll get you everywhere you want to go... but a really good map and walking is by far the most interesting way of doing the centre, surprisingly compact on foot.

Good lord... I managed to think of some things I like about London...

Edit: Oh yeah, the bookshops.... Particularly Motorbooks, might be right up your street.

    Tom,

Definetly the National Army Museum, there is also the national maritime museum at Greenwich, don't forget the cenotaph in Whitehall.

As for transport, the tube is best but could be a bit hot and sticky in June, but it is the best, followed by the bus

Try and take in a historical walk tour. The Jack the Ripper one was superb. RAF Museum at Hendon (already mentioned). Sounds a bit hammy but the open top bus tours are all excellent for just getting a taste of it too.

Look at Hotel Connect too, they often have brilliant deals.

Didn't realise that I missed London in any way at all!!

Sure you'll have a super time and hope you will be made as welcome here as we were in Ireland.

    Cheers
