HS2 celebrates start of construction on UK’s longest railway bridge Went past this yesterday what a monster. Known as a ‘launching girder’, the 160m long bridge-building machine (700 tonnes) is the only one of its kind in the UK and will be used to lift the giant concrete deck segments that form the viaduct’s arches into position. Once each section is complete, the machine will inch itself forward into position to build the next stage.
For those interested in long railway bridges, check out the Welland Viaduct in Northamptonshire. Similarly built of lots of small segments, only in this case, brick and 30 million of them! Welland Viaduct - Wikipedia
