Hi all, I hope I am posting in the right place, apologies if not, but I am new to this site.

I am trying to locate information on my grandfather who served in WW11. I have a copy of his discharge papers, but no one in the family knows much about his history. He died before I was born and according to my mother, he never spoke about his experiences.

I know he served in the Queens Royal Regiment, and I believe the 2nd battalion as his record indicates that he served in Palestine in 1939. The records end however with a discharge certificate dated 5/2/44 with the cause of discharge shown as being for the purpose of an emergency commission as per kings regs 1940 Para 390 XV11. So it seems to me that his military history does not end there and that he was most likely immediately reenlisted from what I have read.

I can upload photos of the documents I have if it is helpful? I only have photos from another family member at this point which are not entirely clear and I am waiting for scanned copies.

Does anyone have any idea how I may be able to identify whether he did continue to serve, and also how he did serve prior to the discharge. Key points of Info I do have are:

    Army No: 6087717
    Full name: Earnest William Hughes
    YOB 1919
Enlisted on 16/8/1937 to Queens Royal Regiment in Kingston
    Campaigns Listed - Palestine 1939 & N.W.F 1940 - 1941
Discharged from Queens Royal Regiment 5/2/1944 in India for the purpose of an emergency commission

His commissioning appears in the Gazette for 15 Aug 1944. Note that there is probably no 'A' in Ernest. His commissioned officer service number is shown in brackets.

Thanks, I had searched the Gazette but did not locate anything. Do you happen to have the page no: this is located on.

Certainly seems there may be more to his story beyond the discharge papers I do have,

Thats not what CL1 asked. Have you applied to the MOD for his WW2 service records? if not then the forms are available via the link in post no 4.

What you have uploaded are NOT his service records

Ok thanks, as I said originally, I’m newly looking at this, and not really sure what I have. If more comprehensive records are available via the link provided I will look into it.

    Hi,

You’ll need to include both his “other ranks” service number and his officers service number when you apply to MOD. If you aren’t aware he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in York & Lancaster Regiment.

    https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/36652/supplement/3753/data.pdf

Cost £30 + cost of death certificate. Money well spent as it will give you full chapter and verse on his military service rather than the very brief summary contained in the pages of his his Army B108 Discharge Book that you have attached. Should take about 3 months to get a reply.

    Good Luck
