    Hi all,

William (Bill?) Dutton was (maybe still is!?) my grandfather.

The information I have is sparse indeed.

He was stationed at Tangmere in June 1943 when my father was conceived (possibly before and after too)
He was an Airman (source is my grandmothers death cert)
He apparently originally hailed from Yorkshire.

My grandmother was Nellie Hobden and she worked in the NAAFI.

I've been to Tangmere museum and it didn't help although on the base map you can see that the NAAFI and the airman quarters were right next to each other :)

That's it! Any insight or info would be appreciated

    Thanks everyone
    Kevin

    Death details
There are about 110 possible William Duttons that died in the UK but he might have moved from Yorkshire and died elsewhere

It will be very difficult without more definitive details, in my opinion

    Hi Kevin

Was thinking again about this last night and thought there may be another line you could follow.

It is assumed that William was in the RAF, this may or may not be true, however if he was, you do not know if he was Aircrew, Groundcrew, Base Admin or RAF Regiment.

The line to follow would be to find out what squadrons were based there in June 1943, there should be associations for those squadrons that would be worth contacting, and if he was aircrew then checking out the London Gazette should provide details of promotions etc during his RAF career

I would have thought that the museum there would be able to asisst you in knowing which squadrones where there at that time. Also if he was aircrew then obtaining the ORB's for those squadrones for those date might mention him

    No guarantees though

    Good hunting

PS if you have more details about your grandparents post them here and lets see what we can do

Can you upload your mothers birth certificate

and provide details of your father, full name, date of birth etc

    TD

Edit : that should read mothers death certificate, NOT birth certificate

I echo what Tricky says, if we go hunting for people we really need as much information as possible. You say “that’s it” but I am sure there must be more.

Some approximate ages would help and also the details of your grandmother’s death (I think that is what Tricky meant). As William was an airman, was it wartime or much later? Was he the informant?

Can find no marriages for Dutton/Hobden.

Can find no births in 1944 for a Dutton with a mother whose maiden name was Hobden.

Was Nellie her real name or a nickname, was Hobden her birth name or from a previous marriage? Where was she living, how old?

Was your father an only child? His birth records should give his mother’s maiden name but we need a name, date and location.

If you could post a few more details it may help.

    Hi All,

First of all, let me apologise for not replying sooner, I have not had the email alerts for replies on the thread and so thought there had been no answers. Thank you for your replies thus far.

My Grandmother was born Nellie Hobden but her name at the time of her death was Nellie Dutton, she died 05/12/69 in Portslade by sea, aged 62. Her DOB is 13/08/07 which means her age in '43 was 36. On her death cert, under occupation it states 'Widow of William Dutton, Airman, Royal Airforce. According to my father, she was never married to William Dutton though and had changed her name and my fathers surname to Dutton some years after my father was born. The relationship between my grandmother and William Dutton appears to have been a fling.

I have searched for William Duttons via the Gazette but not by squadrons, I've discovered some squadrons which were there in WW2 and I'm checking ORB's now - thank you for this suggestion. I'll contact Tangmere again to find out the squadrons that were based there in summer 43, when my father was conceived.

Tricky dicky, you mean my fathers birth cert? Under 'rank or profession of father' in my fathers birth cert, there is a line, indicating not applicable, possibly suggesting that the relationship had soured by then.

In an ideal world, I'll be able to find a reference to a William Dutton, based at Tangmere in 43 and go from there. Back to the ORB's!!!!

    Thanks again
    Kevin

I have a Sgt William Arthur Dutton into my archive who was a Bombaimer on Lancaster ED497 shotdown Boerdonk (Holland) 16/17th June 1943. Erected with the grandson of Pilot F/Lt C.W. Dunnet a memorial near the spot where ED497 crashed and took the lives of seven young airmen. Also two familymembers of him attended.

    Cheers,
    Adrian
