Frank was Cdg. 9th Bt., 8th Punjab Reg., 36th Indian Inf. Bde. According to records on Commonwealth War Graves site and other WW2 sites, Frank died on 4th August 1945 in Burma but was buried in Calcutta, India on 5th August, 1945. Was he perhaps wounded in Burma and flown to Calcutta for treatment, but did not make it? Why was he not buried in Burma. Does anybody have this information.

Amongst many sites, commonwealth war graves and ancestry.com all show his date of death as 04 Aug 45 and it was definitely in Burma. Was he still in Meiktila? Because he was Australian with an Indian Bde attached to the British Bde. it is not easy to track down the info I need. I am still trying to obtain service records for 8th Punjab...not easy. Liz
Thank you Bamboo 43. There is very little I don't already know about Frank Hunter. My only outstanding query is the one I have requested. Thank you for your interest.
Hi Clive. CWGC were very helpful. They just have no record of how Or why Frank got from Burma to India. Liz
No, Clive. I guess this might be held by his family. He had no children and I have no idea if hE has any living relative. Who would have issued this? I am not family which makes it difficult to get his service record, although I am trying to get this through the MOD. Kew, Nat.Archives, were helpful but nothing relative to how/where he died in action on their available records. Best. Liz
Hello Liz I have dropped a message to forum member Spidge who started a thread on here a while back to see if he can assist further. regards Clive
Hello Liz Spidge contacted me but cant add anything sorry to be a pain what info do you have stating he died in Burma Not sure if the link below can help Researching Australian military service: Second World War, 1939-1945 | Australian War Memorial

Thanks, Clive. The site on which I found his death recorded as Burma was the Australian war memorial site...awm.gov.com. I have sent off to the MoD for his full service record. Will let you know what happens. This can take months apparently ☹️ In the meantime if I find out anything useful I will add it to this link. Best Liz
Thank you for your interest and assistance, Clive. I have now located Frank Hunter's service record. It is held by the British Library. Because he was Indian Army - Service No. Prefix "EC" - his records are not held by the MOD but by the BL. I shall be viewing them this week.
