Lt John Lindsay Lane

Discussion in 'Royal Artillery' started by jonathan mouland-begbie, Oct 15, 2017.

  1. I am researching my Great Uncle John Lindsay Lane who served with the Royal Artillery in WW2 and then in Korea as Captain Lane B Battery Commander 170 Ind Mortar Regimant RA and was killed in the battle of Happy Valley 4th January 1951. I cannot find any info regarding his service in WW2. He joined the Army in 1942 and has 39-45 star and France /Germany star as well as 39-45 war medal and 39-45 defence medal. Any info at all or points in the right direction would be grateful Thank You.

This is his entry in the Royal Artillery enlistment.
There is also a note on how he was killed on 4th January 1951

Killed when an enemy artillery round scored a direct hit on The F.O.P. killing Lane and wounding the other Occupants. Reported missing then killed in action.

I know you will know a lot about Lieutenant Lane other than what you have shared here ? In order for others to help you I have put together here what is freely available and easily accessed online . As advised the service records are the most definitive route.

Lieutenant John Lindsay Lane was initially posted as missing on 4th January 1951 later reports suggest an enemy artillery hit his forward observation post, killing Lieutenant J L Lindsay (Possibly The Battle of Happy Valley?)

The Times reported him missing 20th January 1951
The Times reported him killed 4th August 1951

    Remembered on the family grave

Ah! I have just realised I did the above searches for nothing ..you already asked the same question in 2017! Why not just `Bump` the original thread ? It will save (us) a lot of time.

No apology necessary, and no inconvenience to me. Simply put the time could have been better spent looking for the WW2 references rather than painting a background to base the search on had I known other members had already supplied so much I would have skipped that stage? Moving on...............
