I got a copy of this book on Tuesday and would like to recommend it to anyone with an interest in the Luftwaffe / air war over GB / the Atlantic.
The book is by a gent from County Kery , Justin Horgan who along with his co author the late paddy Cummins had been researching and writing this book as time allowed over the past twenty years, seems like a long time but when done in one's spare time as a buisnessman and family man it is understandable.
The book deals with the crashes and forcelandings in and around Southern ireland of Luftwaffe aircraft which found themselves forced to land in Ireland as a direct result of combat or as a result of weather or mechanical failure.
The aircraft types range from FW-200, Ju-88's B&V 138's, He-111, the surviving aircrew in the manin found themselves interned in the Curragh for the duration of the war , those who died are now buried in the German wargraves Comission plot at Glencreee County Wicklow.(Apart from those who crashed a number of these men were cast ashore by wind and tides some came to ireland and some were cast ashore on GB's Western Coast , some remain missing.
The book itself is a hardback published by "Horgan Press with sponsorship from several large companies with aviation interests in Ireland,
The book draws from accounts of those directly involved in events and the National Archives of Ireland GB and Germany a great deal of information is presented for the first time and in his research and writing Justin and Paddy were supported by the aicrew who found themselves in irland and their famalies.
What do you get for you money - well in short a damn fine book - the book hsa been produced to a high standard it is sturdy well bound paper quality is excellent and the photographs are reproduced to a high standard bith period B&W and views "today" of crash locations and veterans in the twilight of their years.(Justin visited Germany to meet and interview these men as well as travelling to meet visitors who returned to ireland over the post war years.
The project does cover a rather neglected aspect of the airwar the lives of these men in Ireland as internees whilst they "stayed" almost all Allied aircrew were quietly returned unknown to the Germans.
I found the book to be very informative it is well laid out reads well and is lavishly illustrated both in terms of period and more modern day photos along with award documents owned by the men whose story is being told, in many cases news paper reports of the day have been reproduced which in itself is a nice touch.
Ireland in the 1940's was a very rural community and one has to wonder how people flet when " the war" arrived on their doorstep, in their fields and towns (Dublin and some Irish towns being bombed in error) it must have made a distant war seem very close.
Priced at 35 Euros plus postage you get 380 pages of good reading.
