MACR Reports ETO

Discussion in 'General' started by Joseph Duckworth, Sep 5, 2022.

  1. Hello friends,
I have a needle in a haystack issue in locating a MACR report for my grandfather who would have been a passenger on a personnel transport that went down in Holland some time in 1944 or early 1945. All I have is the story and my grandfathers name but no idea of exact date or serial number of the plane. Would anyone have a good suggestion as to how to pursue this research?

Put his name in the search box of this site……it has MACR reports and may be able to find him

    US Military Officer Research

Also, if you post his name, we may be able to give you more info

  4. Wow! Thank you so much! I found him under the Warrant Officers section (James C Duckworth Jr.). I will contact them to see what they can provide.

  6. Yes, that’s him! He became a WO while in the UK. There are a few articles from Newspapers.com and a report he was interviewed for about the Normandy Base Section on Fold3. We have a few of his stories but no real service records to back these up or look into further from when he went to France. He worked his way out by volunteering as a guard for a POW transport back to the states in March 1945.

Is this possibly him, found that he was “interviewed” extensively. All records from Fold3.com

  8. Yep that’s him. Unfortunately I missed the opportunity to contact Mr. Ralph Steele. He passed away a year before we came across this report. My grandfather passed away in 1997.

Do you have any clue on Month of Crash, I know you said 1944 to 1945, but if you have any idea of month that would help greatly. Their are websites that have details of crashes in the Netherlands but without a month it would take “months” to sort thru them……also, if you knew if it was a ‘transport” aircraft (eg DC-3) or other type?? Any thing may help

CL1, he’s an American…….and his records may have been one of them ‘lost” in the Fire in 1972…..but their are other sources to help “piece together” a bit of his records. The search for me right now is trying (if I can) determine the possible “air crash” he “may” have been involved in. Joseph has indicated it was possible in the Netherlands in 1944/45……trying to see (my post above) if he has ANY other clues, month, year, or type of aircraft.

I now know he was with the 64th Finance Disbursing Unit (made payments for US, payed the troops etc) so I’m assuming he may have been a passenger going somewhere in this regards, OR he may have just been returning to England??? All a guess until Joseph can either give us more clues, or I can FIND more clues

    Cheers

  12. Maybe try December 1944? I know that he was at the same airfield in England that Glenn Miller flew his unauthorized and fateful flight out of on 12/15/44. He believed he was due on that flight but would not have known about the flight being unauthorized or may have been due to go on the one that was cancelled. It would definitely be a personnel carrier. Not sure what type but he definitely moved around a lot. Hope to see some additional info from the other site about the SO he is mentioned on.
