    Hi,
About the landing zone W, east of Saint-Aubin.
Which unit cleaned the field before gliders landed ?
    None did this job ?
The gliders landed between the Rommel asparagus ?
It's very strange in this case...
Do you have more information about that ?
    Regards,
    Xavier P

    Xavier,

According to the 6th Airborne Divisional HQ war diary under section 14 of Appendix (6 AIRBORNE DIV OPERATION INSTRUCTION No.1):

"Landing strips W (Strips E & F) are being prepared by 263 Fd Coy (3 Brit Inf Div). Units landing on LZ "W" remain at their LZ RVs until called fwd by the bridge control post."

    Hi,

The WD for 263 Field Coy has the following entry “Proceeded to sites for Glider Landing Strips at Ouistreham with No 4 Commando but driven back - eventually approached strips by way of Colleville-Sur-Orne & work was completed by 20.00 hrs

Work started on the strips around 17.30 and was completed by 20.45 in another report.

    Regards

    Danny

Thank you all for the last replies.
New question, in a document for the 6th Airlanding Brigade, not the war diary, I read that :
    ISUM No.5. (1.Enemy chapter)
Trace P (2.Own Tps, about the tasks for the 3 Brit Div)
Trace Q (13.Mine clearance, about the roads clear of mines)
    That's refer to what ?

    Xavier,

Intelligence Summary No. 5 - I don't know at the moment where you could find that.

Trace P and Q are referring to a map trace. Presumably a trace over a map to mark anything you want to illustrate. I'm not sure what medium was used, something thin and easily seen through with markers for alignment? Someone will straighten me out if I'm off track.

From 6 Airldg Bde OO No.1:

    Trace P
    2. Own Tps
    (c) 3 Brit Div with under comd 27 Armd Bde lands on QUEEN sector (0582 - 0980) at H hr with bde tasks, as shown in Trace P.

    Trace Q
    13. Mine Clearance
    (a) Rds shown on Trace Q are clear of mines, but all other tracks and rds may be mined by enemy or own tps. Units will be responsible for mine clearance along their own routes fwd off those rds shown as clear, and in their own DZ, Conc Areas, and localities.

    Poor example of a Trace:

    Hi All,
    2 questions :
Did any pathfinders landed West of the Canal ?
Why all the gliders didn't land on the same LZ, North of Ranville ?
    Regards,
    Xavier P

PS : I wish you an happy new year.

    Xavier,

I'm not aware of any Pathfinders dropping west of the Canal. Lt Midwood's stick was slow to leave aircraft on their jump over LZ K. Four men were reported missing some of whom may have been taken POW? They could have come down south or possibly west of LZ?

Do you mean why didn't all the Tonga gliders land on DZ N? The Parachute Battalions with their assigned gliders loaded with jeeps and supplies would want them close at hand on the same LZ they dropped on (N, V, K) which were close to their various objectives. That would also include gliders carrying artillery detachments under their command.

    Regards ...

It's a good answer Cee (Cee = réincarnation du Général Gale). Landing zone "W" was for the 6th Airlanding Brigade...?
