Hello to all, I'm currently working on a large picture montage of the the doings at Anzio. I recently acquired a pear shaped map of Italy in the form of a towel. It dos not look right.. I've had a look at the books that I've got & come up with the map attached. Can anyone improve on this? Any links or maps would be appreciated. Thanks Stu.
Have you looked at 'The Times Atlas of the Second World War'? It has some very detailed maps that might assist.
HAARA, thanks for that. No I'm not aware of the Times Atlas of the Second World War. Do you happen to have a copy? I'm guessing you have seen some of the maps. I'm looking at enlarging it to 31 inc by 20 inc wide. Rather on the large size.
Stu My own atlas for ww2 is the (very heavy) but excellent Historical Atlas of World War II By Alexander & Malcolm Swanson. Try your local library ? Ron
Ron Thanks for your reply. It looks like some of these Atlas's are going to be a physical impossibility to scan & print. I'm not giving up, the frame cost me a penny or two ( and the rest). I've managed to get some good maps & photos to fit the surrounding mount. Will try my local library to see if they scan the book. Not sure they will have it though.. Regards. Stu.
Good maps require a bit of thought. Who is the map for? How much information do you need put across? Does this all need to go on one map or do you need two? What can be left out? I attach a minimalist map that I have used as the base for others. The map you showed looks oriented towards the 8th army rather than the 5th. There is a lot more detail in the Gothic line area than Anzio. You could have included Terracina - the anchor point of the Senger line, Anzio and Netturno, Campoleone, Cisterna and Ardea. Were you planing to have a more detailed map showign this area?
There are some WW2 era maps online but they are in two halves which means a bit of work to join them together. McMaster University: Italy, North. Italy, South. At a different scale: Sicily. Library of Congress: Italy, North. Italy, South.
It was published back in 1989 by Guild Publishing - I obtained it through a book club. Looks like it's available through Abebooks if you want a copy. 9780723003175 - The Times Atlas of the Second World War - AbeBooks
This any good to you? http://www.dalvolturnoacassino.it/images/img4712.jpg From this site: Dal Volturno a Cassino - Fotografie e immagini - (images_default.asp) (Many more possibilities - including several more in that series - at this page)
Cheers chaps, thank-you to you all for your time & input. Not had a chance to view everything as yet. Its a good job I've not glued anything down. Looks like I'm going to busy for a while! Happy days. Stu.
Richard Lewis, thank you for the links. The McMaster University maps are going to take some joining.. How do's that work? When I've merged the two, it looks like a detailed map. Something I may be able to use.. Regards Stu.
Charley, your first map is smart .. I've not come across that series before. Its the latter stages. Do you have the previous ones? Not sure about From this site: Is it in English? Sorry if I've missed something. Regards Stu.
HAARA, thank-you for the link. For the various cheap prices that are on offer, it would be rude of me to not obtain a copy. Paper, or hardback.... Sorry to you all that I could not work out the multi quote function... My specs are on the end of my nose. Regards Stu.
My first resort usually is the West Point military atlas series; they can be bought as books or downloaded free. They are not American-biased despite the name and are as sharp as a pin.
Staffsyeoman, I've not come across the West Point military atlas series. Downloaded for free sounds good to me ( Not that i mind paying for something that is quality). Thanks for the heads up. Stu.
In the maps that I've got, there is no r in Netturno! And yes, I've got a few.. Is that a typing error? Whats with the showign? Have you forgotten Campo di Carne, Aprilia, Littoria, Carroceto and Fossignano? I'm far from a Historian! I was not aware that I'ad asked so many questions.. Thanks for all the questions. Regards Stu.
No, it isn't in English, but I managed to muddle through the options as a lot of words look like Latin. The only ones available in that series are: Dal Volturno a Cassino - Fotografie e immagini (picture 4712) Dal Volturno a Cassino - Fotografie e immagini (picture 4660) Dal Volturno a Cassino - Fotografie e immagini (picture 4590) That site - although full of resources - seems temperamental and I often get loading errors.
Charley, a large degree of patience on your part. Far more than myself. I was kind of hoping that the site had a language translation option. I must admit that i didn't look much in to it. Shame that its temperamental. The last two are as smart as the first one. Thanks for your time.
Charley, I thought i would just inform that there may be some more maps in that series. I've also seen the same formats for different campaigns. The No's that are in the top right hand side, are getting higher. Not had a chance to work out who the author is, or what the series is called!
Bit tied up at the minute, but a reverse google image search (where you upload the image you have to find it again along with other similar images) may help.
