Thanks Tom - I still have a problem though - The Sussex marshalling camps were prefixed 'J' Newick and Chailey is NOT listed but 'J5' is in the right area but is listed as J5 Binham & The Hooke, Plumpton (J5) D-Day Marshalling Area Camp (camp capacity 1,400 personnel) (Q825389 & Q820375) J5

Jumping in on this thread, are you looking for the location of these sites? The Hooke is at Chailey, East Sussex and there is a Bineham nearby:
    The Hooke.jpg

On satellite maps this is The Hooke:

EDIT, text in red is incorrect
Q825389 & Q820375 look like map references to me but are near Biddenden in Kent.
    TQ825389 is here:

    TQ820375 is here:

    EDIT: Correct locations are:
    wQ825389 is here

Apologies if this is not what you are after.

Many thanks very useful. I haven't got a wartime OS Sussex map - So I am a bit confused about Map References. I'll have to get one and plot-out these:-

SUSSEX - MARSHALLING AREA 'J' HQ was at Southover Manor School in Lewes.

    MARSHALLING AREA ‘J’ CAMPS

    J1 Middleton Manor, Hassocks (J1) D-Day Marshalling Area Camp (camp capacity 860 personnel) (Q781331) (TQ3414) J1

Westmeston, Hassocks, East Sussex BN6 8RL, UK

This was one of a number of troop camps in Sussex around the time of D-Day. Camp J1 had a capacity of 860 men. Troops camped in Marshalling Area J (in Sussex) were part of Force ‘S’ which landed on Sword Beach on D-Day. Most of these troops came from the British 3rd Infantry Division. Units in Marshalling Area J embarked through Newhaven and Shoreham.

J2 Stanmer Park, Brighton (J2) D-Day Marshalling Area Camp occupied by Canadian Army units (camp capacity 2,800 personnel) (Q772287) J2

    J3 Firle Park (J3) D-Day Marshalling Area Camp (camp capacity 2,600 personnel) (Q909260) J3

J4 Novington Manor, Plumpton (J4) D-Day Marshalling Area Camp (camp capacity 450 personnel) (Q803331) J4

    J5 Binham & The Hooke, Plumpton (J5) D-Day Marshalling Area Camp (camp capacity 1,400 personnel) (Q825389 & Q820375) J5

J6 Sutton Hall, Barcombe (J6) D-Day Marshalling Area Camp (camp capacity 1,000 personnel) (Q869377) J6

    J7 Buckham Hill & Lodge Wood, Uckfield (J7) D-Day Marshalling Area Camp (camp capacity 1,500 personnel) (Q885396 & Q885388) J7

J8 Paxhill, (Haywards Heath) (J8) D-Day Marshalling Area Camp Used by Canadians (camp capacity 1,200 personnel) (Q796456)

    J9 Details unknown

J10 Wykehurst Park, Bolney (J10) D-Day Marshalling Area Camp (camp capacity 1,520 personnel) (Q694435) J10

EMBARKATION AREA Newhaven, 51-53 Meeching Road D-Day Embarkation Area HQ EJ2 (Q881202)

Using the above example, Q781331, the location can be found by using the 'coordinate translator' site, use the British Cassini Grid and put a W in front.
    The "Coordinates Translator"

The other reference, TQ3414 is a modern reference for the same position, use this:
Streetmap - Maps and directions for the whole of Great Britain

    Both locations are here:
    Google Maps

(Forget my previous comment about Biddenden, Kent, post has been edited)

These battalions from 49 Division left from marshalling camps J1 to 10 which were in Sussex. They were manned by units of 134 Inf Brigade. - what units manned each of the J camps. So that I can study war diaries and learn what Battalions passed through each J Camp.
    Thank you

What type of data are you looking for? Nominal Rolls, or just names of Units, and ONLY for Canadian using Sussex Marshalling Camps. Just trying to narrow down what your looking for so I can check my files and advise

    Hi
    Thanks for responding
What I am concentrating on at the moment is the ten Sussex 'J ' MA's who occupied them and in what order.

All I have at the moment is this:
    J5 Binham & The Hooke, Plumpton (J5) D-Day Marshalling Area Camp (camp capacity 1,400 personnel) (Q825389 & Q820375) J5

5-9 June KOYLI I guess J5 was in two parts Binham and The Hooke shared between KOYLI & HALLAMS
    6-9 June Hallams
    2-5 July Calgary Highlanders

J6 Sutton Hall, Barcombe (J6) D-Day Marshalling Area Camp (camp capacity 1,000 personnel) (Q869377) J6
3-6 July The Queens Own Cameron Highlanders

Lots to do - needs finding and trawling through Unit War Diaries. Starting with Assault infantry battalions then follow-on bns.

Any help apricated - All the best

    Bill

Has anyone got a copy of the May/June War Diary of 134 Infantry Brigade whose units staffed the marshalling areas in Sussex ?
