Like so many things, it depends on the circumstances, as the flaps would still operate as normal flaps.

What a great picture And June Allyson was in it too!!! Yes indeed. Its such a SAC plane. The B-52 just didnt look as powerful nor the B-47. I did like the B-58 Hustler though

Due to the fact that this thread has gone way off topic - I admit that it was my fault - I am moving it to the Barracks in order that we can still discuss the latter subjects without any hinderance.

    What a great picture

Agreed, The B-36 is a very cool aircraft, I also liked the Flying Wing(remember War of the Worlds) Jimmy Stewart was one of my favorite actors. SAC, It's a Wonderful Life, The Flight of the Phoenix, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington were good movies.

It's hard to think it, but Jimmy Stewart used to be the most senior USAF Reserve Officer. He held the rank of Brigader General.

Really? i couldn't exactly see him giving orders out.
Personally i've always preferred John Mills and Richard Todd. Ice Cold, Longest Day, Long and the Short, Dambusters, what was the one with Halfpenny Field? Reach for the Stars?

On The Way to the Stars. Interesting fact, Bill Owen, he of Compo fame, played an airgunner and at one point was seen wearing a Warrant Officer's uniform, that was his uniform and trade at the time!!

That was one of the great things about the War films of the fifties and early sixties, many of the actors had served in the war and therefor could bring their expereinces to bear.

As for Jimmy Stewart, think of him as aircraft captain on operation over europe!

God, i can just see him now, nursing back an injured Fortreess, worrying whether to get his crew to bale out, and they refusing to do so. Then the big climax of whether they'll manage to land because there's a cookie hung up in the bay. Wouldn't that have been a bloody good film?

Wasn't kenneth Connor of Carry on Fame a rather succesful fighter pilot?

he actually flew on 17 combat missions on B17 before they transfered him to training duties because of his fame.

According to his biog, he spent the war as a Gunner in the Army.

Raymond Baxter, the TV presenter was fighter pilot during the war. He was one of the pilots who attacked Rommels car.

No! There is a TV Interview with him telling his account of the action.

I'm pretty sure it was Raymond Baxter who, while on a low-level sweep in a Spitfire, saw a V2 rocket just after it was launched. In one of the most optimistic actions ever, he actually took a shot at it, but of course missed. Not long into its flight, it would have been outpacing his shells!

Re: films about Strategic Air Command, I have a confession to make: when I was a teenager, still young and idealistic, I watched Dr.Strangelove because I was heavily into the "Ban the Bomb"/CND thing. When I watched it again in my thirties, it was because I loved the B52s!

I thought it was an extremely effective weapon during Operation Weserübung .

Just remembered it was Peter Butterworth I was thinking of, most unlikely warrior.: Fleet Air Arm, POW, I'd always been told he had several air to air kills but I now Can't find any reference to his career other than it being described as 'promising'...ME110??? Oh yes. This was about 110's wasn't it? (I liked the TSR2 bit best) errrm. Maybe one of the carry-on cast once shot one down? Carry on Sargeant was about an AA Battery? wasn't it?....
    Back to the planes.
