Adam Thanks for the thought If you go to the home page, on the top right you will see that there is already a link to "Ron's Army Album" which is a Blog which duplicates all my postings on the BBC People's War Archives. I don't suppose it would require too much effort to include another link to my "Actual" Blog which duplicates the Album. Ron Goldstein's Actual Army Album I have also placed quite a few photos in my Photo Album on this site, most of which are taken from the album. Thanks again Ron
If you mean the link on here Ron, I placed it there myself - It's a damned good read after all - happy to double up with a link to the 'actual' page too, will sort. ~A
One of the lesser joys of getting old is the way the days/weeks/years seem to whizz round like the hands of a watch with a broken spring Today happened to be our (that's Nita & I) Wedding Aniversary, 61 years to the day, and I found myself looking at July 3rd's of yesteryear. In July 1945 I was at Velden, in Austria, helping to run a POW camp and I see my diary records the day in question. Can it really be 65 years ago ? Blimey!, that's almost a lifetime July 1945 Monday 2nd. July 1945 On stag & didn't it pour. I was on first relief & my 10 to 12 shift seemed to collect all the mist in the valley. Half the P.O.W. cage is under water. Snow on the nearby mountain peaks. Tuesday 3rd. July 1945 Feeling the effects of last night's do. Corp' from N.Demob Unit is getting my films developed at Villach for me. "Sorcerers Apprentice" at canteen. Wednesday 4th. July 1945 On stag for the umpteenth time. 2nd Relief and arranged my own beat. Quite a lot of fun watching 'Teds' ( Tedeschis, therefore Germans) negotiate 'bridge'.
Ron Congrats on the wedding anniversary- a great example for the youth of today! regards Robert PS Are you really that old, and you use a computer better than I do!!!!:sign_wow: also thanks for the site and the diary, I wish my Dad had something like that I could look at.
One of the lesser joys of getting old is the way the days/weeks/years seem to whizz round like the hands of a watch with a broken spring Amen to that! I can't believe I turned 80 in June. Fondest regards Ron and congratulations to you and Nita! Peter
Robert Thanks for the congrats, I've passed them on ! Peter It's so nice to see contributions from you young folk and I've passed your good wishes on to "She who must be obeyed" Mille Grazie ! Ron
I've just realised that yesterday was exactly a year since I handed over my Army Album to the Imperial War Museum. I know I wrote about the handover here, on my Blog, Ron Goldstein's Actual Army Album and I also wrote some stuff earlier on this very thread. I am well aware that a year is not a large section in the annals of time but, being human, I am slightly pxxxxxd off that the Museum has taken this long to make the Album readilly available to WW2 researchers. I've given up writing to the Museum and now confine myself to a once a week search of the IMW Collection online to see if they have finally got their finger out Slightly disgruntled oldie in Cockfosters. Ron
The IWM search engine could do with an update. The results of searches appear in Catalogue Number order and there is no way to rearrange them in alphabetical name order. This doesn't matter for a short list but it's a pain when there are several pages, for example searching under the keyword diary throws up 2,398 results in a sequence starting 1869, 1870, ..., 15949,15958, 15988, which makes browsing through them quite hopeless. Another peculiarity is their classification system. For example, searching under Goldstein in 'Documents' finds no results. However, a search under Goldstein in 'All Records' gives 26 results, some of which many would consider to be documents. No actual documents are online, merely a brief description. That said, they do appear to be pretty thorough although remarkably slow. As far as I can make out, they have now reached 2007 with Captain Marci’s diary relating to the Jews at Thessalòniki (Salònika).
I need a favour ...................... Is anyone contemplating visiting the Imperial War Museum in London in the near future ? If you are, and would like to help me wake up the authorities at the IWM, could you please drop me a private message so I can explain what I require. Thanks, in advance, for any assistance Ron
I am delighted to report that, as of today, my illustrated memoirs and my old Army Album have finally been catalogued on the IWM website and can be found here: Private Papers of R Goldstein | Imperial War Museums They say everything comes to he who waits but I have to admit that it has been a bloody long haul ! Ron ps The blog version of my album can be also seen here: Ron Goldstein's Actual Army Album
Ron-I presume there is a search button, unlike the BBC People's War page which they have deleted Lesley ps Ah found it!
Hello Ron Read through your album on the blog, great stuff! Would like to view the album on the IMP site but all I get is a description and no picture only an IMP image symbol? Do you have to register to view images? If so can't find a registration page? Chris.........
I am really pleased that your donation has finally been catalogued. The album should be accessible upon request to researchers at the Reseach Room. I visited the IWM including the Research Room a few weeks ago on another matter. I asked if they had a backlog on cataloguing new acquisitions but the person on duty did not know. A few weeks would be reasonable while months, years even, is rather poor to put it mildly.
LADC This link will give you info on how to book an appointment to view any item within the IWMs collections. Our Research Facilities | Imperial War Museums With thanks to all for your support over the last couple of years ! Ron
Just in case any of you are thinking of paying a call to the Imperial War Museum in London I would be obliged if you could test out the facilities to see if my old album is still in good nick The catalogue details may be seen here: Private Papers of R Goldstein | Imperial War Museums Thanks a lot ! Ron
Bringing this thread up-to-date with a plug for some nice folk at the Imperial War Museum in Lambeth. Imperial War Museums IWM London My posting #17 on this thread reminded me that it was almost 8 years since I donated my album and memoirs to the IWM Private Papers of R Goldstein | Imperial War Museums and I thought it about time that I paid a visit there to see if they still existed I tried booking an appointment online for myself and daughter No.1 for a date next week but was immediately warned that there was a temporary ten day delay in answering any communications. It did however give a phone number for any urgent queries. It was then that I struck gold, because, after I'd explained the circumstances and given my age they could not have been more helpful and booked us in for all day next Wednesday. All being well, I will return to this thread after my visit. Ron
