Been bugging me since an episode of Monarch of the Glen appeared sunday b4 last. In the episode they pulled a German plane out of the loch that was later described as a ME109 although it looked more like a ME110 to me as it looked as if it was a 2 seater. Now I have doubts about my memory regarding these matters, admittedly from Battle magazine etc back in the 70s..

Is there an expert out there?

It was a two engine two seater aircraft.

A Bf109 would not have had the endurance to fly to Scotland and back by the way and I don't think the Bf 110 would either without extra fuel.

A Bf109 based in northern France only had the endurance for about 30 minutes over London and return and this would have been much less if actually engaged in combat, which was usually full throttle and used fuel up much faster.

Bf rather than Me is the correct prefix for both these aircraft, by the way, because the designs were started before July 1938, when the Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (Bavarian Aircraft Works) was renamed Messerschmitt A.G. This is how they were known in German sevice. Later designs carry the Me prefix.

Radar equipped nightfighters carried a crew of three

Hess flew a ME110 from Germany to Scotland. Also, ME110 were used in attacks from Norway.

He did but remember he didnt fly back.
The Bf-110 was as has been said generally a 2 seater aircraft though some versions had a crew of three.

True, the prestwick RAFA club has one of the prop blades from the plane.

However, given that a Me110G had a range of 1075mls with two 198 gallon drop tanks then I think it is most probable that if the wreck they dredged up was in fact one of those on a raid from Norway.

Morse seems to have settled the range question.

As for Hess, he began his flight from Bavaria, so normal range data from Norway does not apply. Conspiracy theorists (of which I am not one) seem to think that if he had managed to land properly, there were people on the ground who would have refuelled his aircraft.

Didn't pay all that much attention to the programme plot to be honest but I now feel my outburst at the time has been vindicated!! ....thanks to all who replied and to Battle Comic illustrators.....
