If they were from the following Commonwealth nations, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa, they would also receive their respective country's national war service medal. (The Australian and South African medals would be officially named.)

Those such as Poles, Free French and Czechs were, officially, just entitled to receive and wear any campaign stars for which they qualified whilst in UK service if their own nations issued an official war medal (i.e. they could not wear both GB war medal and their own nation's war medal); however this was most often ignored and not rigidly enforced by the UK govt. when they were issued.

Below is an image of what the medal looked like. Source of it is:

The medal is fairly easy to get hold of on Ebay, but an original of the bar is VERY rare indeed.

There is a company selling a repro miniature of it; I have one and it is nicely produced. Details at:

Thank you all for your nowledgeable reply's. I'm not in any way a medal collector(as you can see by first initional question). But I do have a couple of medals I have bought from fairs I have been( a ww1 trio and pair). I thought a 1939-45 star with clasp would be beautiful and honored to put alongside my other medals. Any idea of value and were I could get one from. Maybe getting a star and a replica bar purhaps would be the easiest ?

The actual Stars can be had for under a tenner, but with a genuine Battle of Britain clasp attached makes it worth many hundreds of pounds. As such, there are lots of fakes about and if you feel you really want a genuine issue - and are prepared to pay this much for an anonymous, small piece of metal - your best bet would be to go to an established dealer.

However, you can get copy clasps from a number of such dealers and ebay etc. - just use it as the keyword for a search - for about £10 (and ironically it would probably be cheaper to get a genuine 1939-45 Star rather than a copy).

So, yes, I'd go for your first idea re. the fake clasp and real Star.

Hi thanks for your info, yes your are right, a orgional clasp and star I've found for £450. But on ebay your right in saying I could get a star for under a tenner, Ive also just got to find a replica clasp and war medal for desplay purposes. Ive also found this site if anyone is interested!!
