On page 317 of Fourth Indian Division it says,

"To assist Central India Horse in guarding this open front 11 KRRC and
5 Reconnaissance Regiment were taken under Divisional command."

This is regarding the period afterthe Cassino battles when 4th Indian Division were sent to the Adriatic coast.*

It can't be 5 Recce Regt as they were at ANZIO, I just read in the 5th Div History that they were at La Cogna at ths time.

Who could the author of the Fourth Indian Div history be referring to then?

Who was the Recce unit of 5th Indian Div?
    Could he have meant them?
    Can't have as 5th Indian weren't in Italy were they , only 4th, 8th & 10th Indian were?

Central Indian Horse didn't finally rejoin the division until July 1944.

Prior to this 4th Indian Division had a non-conventional (non-W.E.) Recce setup which rankled with 8th Army HQ, and about which there was some negotiation.

In the following extract Tuker puts his position bluntly:

WO 204-7981 4 Indian Division Organisation - From a letter dated Nov 1943 while reorganisation was in progress.

Could your extract be referring to this proposed Recce Regt? I want to know whether this unit was indeed formed and, if so, whether it was retained after the arrival of the CIH. I am beginning to suspect that it was.

The '3rd Brigade' of which that extract speaks is, of course, 11th Indian Infantry Brigade. I may have the composition of these Brigade Recce Groups/Units (Both titles appear) somewhere, if that is of any assistance.

    Edited to add:
By June 1944 4th Ind Div was still lobbying for the retention of their two Brigade Recce Units despite the arrival of CIH who, it was claimed, were not yet trained to the requisite standard. So it appears that the third Brigade Recce Unit was likely never formed.
