I have found a newspaper clipping about my Great Uncle Stanley, unfortunately I have been unable to find any other details about his service. He was born April 1911 and died 8/10/1948 in Marske-by-the-sea, from the dates and places in the clipping I was wondering if he might of been in the Green Howards. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Chris
On FindMyPast, there are three records for an S Harker, No. 4386941 Pte in the Green Howards. He is, however, shown as being missing and subsequently taken prisoner in France on 27 April, 1940. There is no information which would link this definitively to your Great Uncle. You will need to apply for service records: Get a copy of military service records - GOV.UK. Mark
Hi Mark, I saw the FMP records but also couldn't link them. Its the same with the link to the article, unless you also know that his home address was 6 Spout Wynd Marske so I thought the possibility of a typo in the paper of 6 South Wynd Marske. I have ordered a copy of his death certificate so hopefully I can go further with that. Thanks Chris
The only way to positively confirm that this is Stanley is to apply for Service records, or you could contact the Green Howards Museum. I have no other information.
I would have said that was your man as 1GH & rest of 15 Bde were sent to Norway while the rest of 5th Div remained in France, fighting didnt start there until May 10th. ( apart from skirmishing ). Maybe that why the records say France . B Coy & Carrier Platoon of 1 GH were reinforcing 1 Y & L who had a tough fight on 27 th April near Kjorem.
