We moved house last week so most of our books are still packed, the bookshelves are not built and even if they were there wouldn't be enough space for all the books, but I still succumbed this morning and ordered these two essential items; "When I get a little money, I buy books And if there is any left over, I buy food" Deciderius Erasmus "Book collecting is an obsession, an occupation, a disease, an addiction, a fascination, an absurdity, a fate. It is not a hobby." Jeanette Winterson
Tolbrooth, I believe at least the first of those volumes could be considered supplies required for life. (Wow, I didn't know about that one!)
Been meaning to get it for a while, but waiting forlornly as it seemed the sort of thing that might turn up in bargain bins. No joy, so a rare cracking at standard paperback price occurred. Prof Ogorkiewicz is a fascinating writer on armoured development. Wrote a couple of fine books on the subject decades ago, but they are now usually pretty/hugely expensive (they can be found on archive.org, though. If legitimately, I don't know). Seems to have met/worked with/interviewed just about every significant tankish figure of the C20th & beyond. Importantly, he also writes very engagingly. Not always guaranteed in this field. Hoping for a serious book, couple of chapters in & so far not disappointed.
Aaaaarrrrgggggghhhhhhh!!! Saw Adams post, looked the book up on eBay and did a Buy It Now. Does this mean I have a book buying problem or simply an astute eye for valuable additions to my research base?
I didn't buy this I was given it for my birthday! So it doesn't count, right? (It's Dick Taylor's book about WW2 British and American ammunition) I might have just ordered a copy of the 51st Division's history though...
Victor, Warlord, Battle, all producing annuals from, what, mid-late 60s? Damned slippery, especially as my old dear gave mine away... Oh dear.
Re: comics: FB has been prodding me with a reprint of Battle's Charley's War. I have vague memories of it at the time, though I wasn't a regular Battle reader, but it seems to be a well-respected strip.
It's also odd how often Victor comes up in searches for Indian Army stuff because of their 'true stories'. So much for us ignoring their contributions...
Charley's war is very very good. It's stood the test of time (40 yrs?) well, but then so has pretty much everything Pat Mills was involved in. Though... you've reminded me I bought all but the first of one particular collected edition, so that's another trawl of Abe due.
Thanks, Muttley. Charley's War I ordered cheaply, and I now see there's a VI & VII that are neither cheap nor particularly common. Bugger.
To quote my other half: "Shiiiit, a book with 'tank' in the title! That's different." The Tank Factory - British military vehicle development & the Chobham establishment - William Suttie. Looks quite good. One of those I can see becoming hard to find.
your doing it again right in your face and not even subliminal "One of those I can see becoming hard to find" need I say more
Aaaarrrrggggghhhhhhh! That's twice in as many weeks when that word 'TANK' has been mentioned. Must rush over to eBay and see what's on offer............
I had a look at the cost of "In at the Finish" that Tolbrooth mentioned earlier and was rather taken aback. Hope his copy was cheaper!!
