I have just started researching my grandfathers Army past but I was told he started out in the REME as he was too young to fight..?

His name is Alfred John Ritchie, Born 25/06/1922 in Keith, Scotland.
Died in 2005 in Aberdeen. Post war he owned/ran a few car garages in the city. His bother William (1920) may have also been in the same unit as him.

I have these two images of him in Army Uniform that some people have suggested maybe REME and also he is standing next to an REME Recovery truck.

The first image is him on the far right, on the Piazza della Repubblica, Rome.

The second image we don't know exactly where it was taken but there is some suggestion it may be London or Italy again. The truck has the number 4482612 on it's passenger side door.

We have his 1939-1945 and Italy Star Medals. There than that not much else is known.

My mother will be sending off for the MOD records in a few weeks but i guess it will be helpful if we had some extra information about him.

Wondering if any more info can be found about him or if the photos help identify anything.

    Thanks,

    Sarah.

Hi Sarah- welcome to the forum :)

My grandfather was also with the REME. The service records from the MOD will be the best thing to work from as there were many different REME workshops. Is there something else, such as 1 adv based w/shop, written on the back of a photo? That may offer some info before you get his records.

    Hi Sarah

    Welcome

As RosyRedd says you need his service records otherwise you can end up going down lots of blind alleys glad to see you have already sorted those out anfd they are on they way.
Be prepared for some serious searching :)
